Mario Kart 7 seems like one of those luck reliant based games, but that only makes up 50% of the game. The rest involves your skill in driving, I'll be talking about them.

1. Item Mishaps:

Let me be the first to say this, because it's important because it is used much of the time and this is a fact: Let's say you slip by a banana, you have 800 milliseconds to get up to original speed, so before those 800 milliseconds you get hit by a blue shell, you will regain control after the set time runs out. So let's say half a second ago after you slipped on a banana and get hit by a blue shell, you will instantly start driving after being exploded thanks the banana slip, but you lose -3 more, which is better than -3 seconds. The mechanics of getting Slipped > Bump > Explosion by an item is set before a second is applied on everything.
Slipping: +1.5
Burn: +2
Bumping: +2.5
Explosion: +4.5
Thunder: +5 > +1.5 Reset
Squish: +5.5

Slipping would be an aftermath of an explosion or slipping on a banana, you can't slip in another banana until the animation frames end.
Burn: You can continuously get hit, even after being hit once. This only applies to Fireballs.
Bumping would involve Primary Colored shells or getting hit by star, bullet bill, and Racoon Tail.
Explosion would consider only the bomb and blue shell.
Thunder would hit anywhere, you won't be able to slip after since this causes the slipping animation.
Squish would mean by Thwomp or by the blue dinosaur. Your are invincibly squished under until the object decides to release you.
.5: This would mean that no other items would give you invincibility animation frames until a number is greater than the previous.

2. Description

Item Boxes: Weird, this isn't a item, but it helps you obtain the item. During Wi-fi if you get an item, it will ONLY disappear on another players screen if you get them exactly precisely directly through the middle of the box. (Or their internet is slow).

Bananas: This is the traffic cone in the game as I'd like to call it. These can be used very effectively than people actually think. For example, since there's a bunch of people who use big wheels, you can easily block the entrance to something like maple treeway and airship fortress canons, causing them to slip and respawn -3 coins. Or guiding your opponent off screen and slip when you have triple, allowing them to not do sharp turns and having to do a big turn to avoid slipping, by placing them consequently after another, which can be done by looking at your lower screen if you have quick eyes. You can also snipe these in a certain way, if you know their travel distance X your MPH speed. These guys disappear around after 45 seconds, so use them wisely.

Green Shells: These are usually used as back amo, to prevent yourself from getting hurt from the common red shell. When you use green shells, it involves math. Yes, math in a mario kart game, I will tell you why. They don't break unless they hit the wall 5 times, having known this, their angle is based on the wall it was thrown at, a straight wall will return straight back (Obviously). Hit on a curved course, it will take the direction it was shot, causing it to be angled. The travel distance of the green shell doesn't change and remains stationary. A green shell shot in the air will glide in a 30% angle downward after it's shot, the momentum being in tact, as well as the hit box would rely on the car. Triple green shells revolve around you, has a opening depending on the width and size of your car, so it varies, and can hit you directly if at certain positions, even with all 3 around you. Yea, Mario kart is math.

Red Shells: The red shell can be used as a pro, but most people don't even take this, weakness being it cracks the moment it hits a wall, so knowing this, you can avoid a red shell without any items. A good place to avoid a red shell is Snes Rainbow Road, going near the edges of the stage so that it falls off. In a one on one race, it is a smart idea to throw all your red shells at your opponent, not only do you get a sense of trolling, but you cause them to lose all their coins and give you the advantage and upper hand. If you throw a red shell, there is a possibility it may come back, depending on the stand point of your opponent and their speed.

Blue Shell: This is the one thing that irritates me, but there's a few ways to dodge it. The knockback of this is exactly relative to a bomb, it knocks you back, jumping a few times, and depending on your turning position and the box that was hit, you are sent in the opposite direction. To dodge a blue shell, the best way is to go off stage, commonly you waste -6 coins doing this, but lakitu picks you up and drops you down and if you time it, you are given the boost, pressing A the moment you touch the ground, only having to waste 3 seconds compared to 7 after a blue shell. Mushrooms can help you dodge a blue shell, the moment the blue shell does a little animation, spinning around you and then the moment it stops, it immediately thrashes into you, at the moment it stops, you use the mushroom, thus out-speeding it, if you use the brakes and kind of drive slowly while the blue shell is around you, it helps a lot and guarantees it rather than a high speed moving vehicle.

Bob-omb: This is really destructive, and stops a lot of people on their tracks. Leaving it back behind you causes it to walk on it's own and move to your opponent, it usually explodes in 2 seconds after being dropped or thrown, if it's near your opponent, it causes it's bombing duration to fasten. Holding up while throwing it causes it to be thrown farther while throwing it simply gives it a 20 meter radius. When thrown at the wall, it actually bounces off of it, but it's speed is still in tact. If you happen to have a have a bob-omb while having a secondary green shell, you can use this to your advantage by dropping a bob-omb behind you and then exploding it immediately by hitting it with a green shell (both thrown back). It causes a player to slip after touching the aftermath of the explosion, which makes it useful putting it in front of a canon shootout. It is a 5% chance that when a bob-omb explodes, the explosion will appear, but you will remain un-harmed.

Mushrooms: The best one in this game in my opinion is triple, you can easily use these to cut the course such as Luigi's Raceway or Kalimari Desert. Golden Mushroom gives you 7 seconds of infinite L Button mashing, but triple mushrooms give you 2:400 amount of time for speed without and downfalls in off-road. This item is good to use after getting hit or using them during parachute shortcuts such as Dino.

Bullet Bill: Go away noob.

Blooper: Best ways to use this is on courses where there are many turns, such as shy guy bazaar. This item isn't really great, pros have a mind-set memorization of the whole entire course with their eyes closed.

Lightning: Personally, the best item in the game. It hurts everyone, behind or ahead of you (If you save it). The best time to use this is whenever everyone is about to parachute or after getting an item or when everyone is close together, causing them to lose coins and squishing them. The time for it varies, last player only lasts around 1 seconds less than the last person. I usually save this for until I am first or when someone has a item that can be a threat, or of course, when someone has another lightning.

Fire Flower: Little people know how to use this wisely. Fire flowers can be used 7 times, they jump up and down and that really matters because it can avoid your opponent, even if it's a direct shot. 3 shots are the max it can shoot, otherwise the first shot used will take the shot of your newly shot one, so if someone is mashing L, the distance would be like 3 meters in front of them... They can bounce against walls ONCE and they disappear after 3 seconds. They just cause you to spin around and lose -3, but it's not that bad as speed can be regained, but getting hit by a bunch simultaneously is a nightmare, since the hit knockback is regainable after getting hit once.

Star: Worse than mushrooms, believe it or not. It gives you a 30% increase in speed, it makes you invulnerable for 7 seconds and causes anyone touching you to get hurt. Cuts off-road easily and you can even touch bullet bills and avoid blue shells like your best friends, and causes the soundtrack Star.Mp3 to play while in use.

Racoon Tail: Racoon tail is my favorite when I'm in first, I'll tell you why. You have a time limit of 10 seconds to troll your opponent and block wide entrances and areas if you're just spinning around like an idiot as you're hitting the L button while biting your lip to hold your laughter. In a more serious manner, you can stop red shells with this, but your opponent will be smart and not throw them all at once, if they do, it reveals their IQ. It breaks if you don't use raccoon tail and vanishes instantly after making contact with it. It flings bananas the direction it's used, the same distance and travel speed as you throw a banana up. You can use racoon tail to fish coins if you use them in the middle. When used during wi-fi, if you use the racoon tail on item boxes, they won't appear on their screen, and the same for coins.

Lucky 7: Most people are so... dim when they have this. They would spam L to get the exact item they want, let me tell you how this is used. If you press L during this, it picks the item right in front of you. If you press L and theres nothing in front of you, it picks the item that will approach next after the blank spot. Most people just go after the star. A mushroom is good too, a bananas i used to stop a straight wall, green shell for back, red shell for front, a bob omb to stop the players behind you, and not just mash L and have them all go to waste... they're like 6 other free item box bonuses you get, c'mon people, they'll serve you nicely after. If someone touches your item, they get the effects of it when it's spinning around you, this involves their item revolving in their screen at the time, not yours.

If you get shot out of a Cannon, if you hold the control stick down, you go .30% faster, but make sure you hold the control stick up, 1-3 seconds before you land.

Similar to the cannon, you can get a water boost by holding the control stick up. Mechanically, the cart goes faster when you hold up, after doing ramps, etc.

If you get a speed boost when you're behind someone (for 3 seconds), you get a burst in acceleration. If you use a mushroom before it ends, you keep that speed + the mushroom speed, until you run out of mushrooms.

Sharp turns, Smart driving, and creativity get you far in the game, a good thought out vehicle set gets you far too, but mostly the player, and mostly luck (sadly).

Possibilities of items depends on placements, 1 Bullet Bill max, 1 Blue shell max, 2 Lightning max.

I might add onto this soon, depending on the popularity this gets. Thanks

Thanks for the tips!

You mean SNES Rainbow Road, not Snes Rainbow Cruise.
But this thread is useful.
WiiGi (2013-04-09 10:08:06)
Yea, I've gotten used to calling it Rainbow Cruise because of Smash Bros Brawl and calling Bananas Traffic Cones
WWTEpicFail (2013-04-09 10:09:00)
I see.

Experience from being first for a while, I started to take mental notes, they travel around 2X faster than your current cart

This game is really common in 3dsplaza, so I just had to make it. I appreciate it if there were some criticism or expectations that I need to also point out.
