Tonight marked the end of the harvest season. Winter would soon set in, and everyone was finishing up harvesting food, (such as wheat, corn, hay, etc.) from their fields. One of the farmer's daughters wandered alone throughout her father's field. The leftover corn stalks crunched under her feet as she slowly and aimlessly walked along. She passed by their scarecrow, and paused for a moment. Something seemed.. different. She looked at it's eerie face and shivered as it stared back, lifeless. Shrugging off the feeling, she continued onward, enjoying the peace and quiet of the empty field. After a few more minutes of walking, she passed by the scarecrow again. And stopped, again. Looking up at the face of the scarecrow, she felt something was different. Something had changed, but she couldn't put her finger on it..

Ah! The nose! She thought, smiling to herself. The nose was simply a pointy twig, and at the moment, it sat crooked on the scarecrow's lifeless face. She reached up to fix it, when she touched it, she screamed, reeling back in pain. She couldn't figure out what was happening, her entire arm was throbbing in pain, and when she looked up at the scarecrow, it was gone. She looked around the field and saw the scarecrow, running away. "H-hey! Come back!" She yelled, but to no avail. The scarecrow was gone.

She sat for a moment, stunned at what had just happened. "Why are my arms stretching out?" She wondered aloud. Then realization struck her:

Her arms were literally stretching out! Her legs were, too. She stood up clumsily, and fell forward onto her hands and knees. Her body was growing taller and slightly thinner. Her face was morphing, too. Her lips became sewn into a smile, her eyebrows enlongating with the rest of her face. Her nose pointed a little straighter, her eyes grew wider, her cheeks grew inward, and her chin rounded more. Her ears were the only thing that remained unchanged.

She sat in stunned silence, contemplating on what to do. I can't go back to the house.. She thought. I'll scare my parents to near death. Maybe I should find the scarecrow.. She slowly stood up, adjusting to the longer limbs she now possessed. She took one step, then another, then another, until finally getting the hang of it and breaking into a run towards the last spot she saw the scarecrow.

In the woods, bordering our land..

She followed the footprints of the scarecrow (as well as the swath of straw left behind) and eventually found it. Though, it wasn't what she'd expected to find. The entire body was shredded. Remains of the clothing were scattered about, as well as straw and such. The head was the only thing intact, but it was sitting atop a stick, with the black pointy straw hat. There was a note, tacked to the stick underneath the head:

If you are reading this, than your transformation is finished. I didn't intend for it to be you, but you simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. You see, each scarecrow possess' certaint powers. And when they get old, they sit in fields, waiting for the next scarecrow to take their place. Take my scythe and hat. They are now yours. If you wish for more answers, seek out--

The rest of the paper was torn off and missing. The farmer's daughter stood there for a moment, trying to think of who she would need to seek out. She picked up the scythe off of the ground, and took the hat off of the scarecrow's head. "If only I had a mirror.." She said aloud. She glanced at the scythe and screamed, and then dropped the scythe, staring at her reflection in horror. "I-is that m-me?" She said aloud. "I'm too freaky.." She said.

"Scarette.." A voice spoke. "What? Who's there?!" She said, glancing around for any sing of a threat. "That is your name, now.. Scarette." The voice said. "Who are you?" She repeated. "Think of me as.. A guide, of sorts." Said the voice. "Guide? Ha!" She gave a nervous laugh and continued searching for the voice. "Don't bother looking for me, I am a part of you." The voice said. It had changed, though. Morphing into a darker side of her voice. "Why did you call me Scarette?" She asked, staring at her reflection in the scythe. "Is that not your name?" "It's Alex. Or.. Alexandria, if you prefer formality." Alex said. The voice laughed, and it sounded almost like her mother. "My, my, you certaintly don't sound like a farm girl!" The voice said. "Oh? And what should I sound like?" Alex asked curiously. "Nevermind.. I must go." "Wait, go?! You said you were a part of me!" No response. Nothing was making sense.

She sat glumly for awhile, before finally drifting off to sleep. When She awoke, She awoke to a scream and the snapping of twigs. Gasping and looking around frantically for the intruder, she saw a little girl, half-stumbling, half-running away. The girl was in overalls, work boots, and a plaid T-shirt, Her hair was bobbing up and down in a ponytail.

^That's lame, and also disgusting. Have you no imagination? And how is that even possible?! It's disconnected from her non-existent nervous system. That is impossible.

^itz magikle. duh.

The girl glanced back, and Alex recognized the girl as her older sister. "Gwen!" She shouted, getting up. "Gwen, it's me!" Alex yelled. She ran after her sister, and felt herself growing smaller. Gwen looked back, and saw her Alex, instead of the creepy scarecrow-esque figure that had slept under the tree. Gwen stopped running, and watched as Alex approached, dressed in rags.

"What happened to you?" Gwen asked. "I don't know.." Alex responded. "I think I'm blooming.." Alex said. Gwen smiled. "Really?" "Yeah." Alex said. "Let's go home, but try not to scare mom, you know she'd get a heart-attack." They both laughed and walked home.
