It's a reflex because if you suddenly see a nasty thing too close, you'll want it as far away from you as fast as possible. Sometimes this means screaming like a girl and temporarily losing control of your limbs.

Hey. It's a split second reaction in which I cannot decide where my limbs are going (like what Carlos said). For example, the typical reaction to being burnt badly on the hand is to grab onto whatever's burning you. It isn't good, it isn't neccesarily voluntary, but it's what happens by itself.

My natural reaction is to pull towards my body. If I got burnt, I'd pull my hand to my chest, not the item.
