SPCOxion (2014-03-05 06:35:30)I'm personally Christian, but I don't make it a huge part of my life.
I think people take religion too seriously.
@Bean
You missed my point...If we don't all follow the same "rule book" our opinions of Right and Wrong will differ....Who should have the authority to say their opinion is the right one? : P
If I say scuicide is bad,
And Timmy says suicide is okay,
On what grounds are we making a law for, or against it? The majority of opinions?...What makes our opinions correct?
I would go into this deeper, but I don't think anyone would really care to read it through.
Now to everyone saying: "This thread will be ruined by some Athiest or Christian shoving their beliefs down throats"....
This thread IS titled: "Your opinion on Religion" The point of this thread is for people share their opinion/belief (perhaps critical) on religion. It is just an opinion, there's no need to get upset when someone disses your beliefs.
As long as when it comes to speaking negatively on a religion, it's done with constructive critism; not by explaining how stupid religion is with as many insults as possible.
Most people seem to just be saying what their religion is....not really the topic of the thread but at least no flame wars have sparked o3o

carlos11 (2014-03-05 20:49:29)Lani, you are under the delusion that morals cannot exist without religion. There's this branch of philosophy called Secular Morality. You should read about it.

Morals have been existent longer than religion. It was actually religion that couldn't exist without morals.
Mametchi (2014-03-07 03:49:30)What if God engineered us to Evolve?
But, then again, if you don't believe in anything, but there is something, then what?
But what if you do Believe in something, but that Something is nothing? If that's the case, you wasted a portion of precious lifetime praying for something nonexistent.
But if there is Something... And you didn't believe in that Something, then won't that make you neglect your creator? If there is one.
Just my opinion, maybe fact. I dunno.

carlos11 (2014-03-07 14:44:31)I guess you could say atheism is the belief that there is no god (emphasis on belief). However, that's besides the point. Atheism is not a religion because it is not about believing, so I can just go about my day not worrying about the possible existence of a bearded guy on a cloud. You don't hear much about a Church of the Atheists now, do you?

I'm not saying no one has any morals without religion, I'm saying there's no reason anyone would have morals, without religion.
Bit of a rant (optional) show
Because Christians believe that there's an almighty creator who has the authority to tell us what to do (and will punish us with eternal suffering if we displease Him...), they have clarification for morals: What Pleases God and what Displeases God.
Without that understanding, however, anyone can take a child out to a deserted desert, and brutally murder that child without any consequence...There's no law there to stop him, and perhaps he feels guitless because his own opinion of morals doesn't include manslaughter....Who has the authority to tell him he's wrong?
Remember, we've all grown in a "Progressed society"...Everything we know has been told to us. You can't even know your own name without someone telling you, or by looking on a legal document. We're born with no knowledge, meaning we're born with no morals, either. Therefore, any morals you have, have been told to you. So again, what makes those morals right or wrong without an all powerful deity backin' you up on it? : P
(Not trying to sound like a smartass...You're entitled to your own beliefs, too)

carlos11 (2014-03-07 15:39:03)^The reason you (or I, for that matter) cannot do that is because we live in a society that prohibits those things. One cannot simply molest children, slit their throats, and throw them into the desert without fear of retribution, not from God, but from the law. That is, unless we are dealing with a sociopath. As my friend Hobbes put it, we are born as greedy, horrible people and if we could live alone, we would not change our ways. Don't believe me? Go play with a toddler sometime. He won't care about what you want because all he can think about is himself. Sure, you might be thinking, "this is just a baby," but this is where morals fit in. The child's parent must right the wrong and teach him that one must be considerate of others, lest he wishes no one fancy his company, and so it is that the child gives up some freedom to become part of an organized society. This would be the social contract for Hobbes. The child does not change his ways overnight, nor does he literally sign a contract, but little by little he learns his morals. People can't live together without a sense of right and wrong. People had to figure that out before they could create civilizations, otherwise, it simply would not work. Again, morals have been around longer than religion. That being said, I don't think we don't steal because God would frown upon it. It makes more sense that somewhere along the lines someone realized that you feel pretty pissed when someone just takes something from you without asking. Morals are just common sense.
You don't do certain things because people won't like it.
This matters because we are part of an organized society.

Hunter (2014-03-07 17:21:41)Honestly, I think that religion is a waste of time and for control. I will tell you this, I am NOT against people believing in specific things. But Christianity is infact the most harmful religion. By "harmful" I mean that the government is using it for control. By writing the bible, they make civilians believe that an unknown man floating in the sky created you and he has ten rules. Disobey atleast one and you are sent to a place full of torture, death, screaming, and pain. They have people believe that a man who doesnt exist that was actually created by a man - who once lived - created the "bible" I call it all bullcrap. Plus, look at the Third Crusade. The Holy Land. All fighting over "sacred grounds." For what? Say it with me now, RELIGION. The colonists, claiming land to spread CHRISTIANITY. All of the religion in christians has been linked to past events. I will admit, without the settlement of Jamestown, The Lost Colony, etc, etc, we wouldn't have been able to be here.
But, honestly religion is just flat out stupid and pointless.

Exactly, Carlos. We're all born greedy horrible people...I completely agree.
We need a parent to tell us right from wrong...so who told our parents right from wrong? Their parents...and what of them, how do they know? From THEIR parents...and so on and so on....Where did it begin?
Since we're all born greedy and wicked, why would any of us ever stop to think that what we're doing is wrong? Government didn't always exist, so how did morals come to be before laws were enforced? Where did the laws come from?

carlos11 (2014-03-08 02:30:55)Lani- Like I said, I think some morals are common sense. Someone came up with it, just like one day someone figured out why objects fall to the ground.

Immature atheists? Do they have a bad reputation on this website or something?
And please don't start saying "oh here we go again... flame war " because I'm just asking a question
