And how quickly? For my school, it will only spread and linger for a while if it involves someone who is at least somewhat known and it usually stays within the grade in which it started, from what I've observed.

Other smaller rumors can last for more than a few days but stay in one particular classroom. When I was in 9th grade, most of my math class was convinced that I was doing meth and that I was gay. Due to my silence, it lingered for a few months but eventually faded away on its own. I remember people talking to me one on one whenever they got the chance, trying to figure out what was going on in my life by starting small talk and gradually steering the conversation in a more serious direction. For some people, it took a few tries because of his much of a jerk I was (I would give short answers to each question while paying little attention to them), and when I finally realized everyones motives, I was laughing so hard I couldn't get off the floor (I was at home in my room during this time).

So there's one story. Most of the time, however, you can say whatever the hell you want at my school and people usually won't care at all. Even if it's racist, sadly.

My school is retarded and anything spreads. I once said to a girl "There's a rumour that there's a rumour about X" and that even spread. All the chicks strive to "fit in" but they create this meta so it's dumb and meaningless, they all are the same and so they must know everything, uhk

What Alpaca said. A rumor began a few weeks ago when some chick missed school for a few days. They said she was pregnant and had abortions. She's come back since then and the rumor is still going around, lol.

It only spreads to half of the grade. I know no rumours about 6th grade or even 8th. Most of us only know a small fraction of the students in the school, so we can't spread rumours across to other grades.
