Technically, my first handheld was a DSi. My brother had all the Gameboys and such.

Well I mean if you played it it counts. When I say you owning it, it can also mean if it was like your siblings or something or you shared.

Like I've known kids who's first handheld is actually a DS but when they were little they like played a GBA at a friends house. They didn't get their own handheld until later.

That's what doesn't count.

As long as it was something you played sometimes and it wasn't like a friend's I think it counts.

Unless for some reason your friend lived with you when you were little?? Idk

My first handheld was a DS Lite. I never got into video games until I got it back in 2008 or so. That thing got used a ton, and dropped, and even thrown. We still have the thing(with only one hinge now because my sister threw it) and it still works. The only downer to it is the mic doesn't work(I think it stopped working when it fell off of one of the bedposts of my old 1 bunk bed.) but it never gets used anymore. Its locked away in some cabinets.
