The sun is starting to set at the southern town known as Pallet. Out in the fields, a couple of young kids are taking turns to attempt a capture on a wild Nidorino and a little girl is about is try her luck. She holds up the red and white device called a pokeball, and throws it directly at the poison pin pokemon's face, but the purple creature knocks the ball off with its horn and an indifferent look on its face, and leaves the kids to despair. A light-hearted chuckle comes from behind and a slightly older boy with a red cap on his head appears. He tells the kids that weakening the wild pokemon is crucial to its capture, and sends out a Poliwhirl. The blue frog pokemon releases a water gun to knock the Nidorino dizzy, and the boy traps it in a pokeball without much effort as the kids cheer delightfully for him.

His name is Red, and has made himself known to many of his neighbours in Pallet as one of few pokemon trainers around. The creature he just trapped in a pokeball is known as a pokemon, living things that inhabit the world alongside humans. Red has no idea exactly how many differents kinds of pokemons exist in the world, but he aims to capture them all one day.

As the sun decorates the sky with a faint hint of purple and orange, the kids ask Red if he has ever come across Professor Oak, a well-known authority in the pokemon world. Red says that he doesn't intend to and remarks that he probably knows more about pokemons than an old man. The kids tell him that the grandson of Prof. Oak has just returned to town from a far away land in the west and rumour has it that the professor has put much effort in training him as a great pokemon trainer. Red assures them that no trainer could be greater than himself, then waves to say goodbye.

Apparently what the kids have said has intrigued something in Red and the boy keeps thinking about the professor on his way back home. Without paying much attention to his path, he accidentally bumps into a tall figure in black outfit who turns to scowl at him with an unpleasant face. Red watches as the man walks off to join a few others dressed exactly him, black cap, white boots and gloves, and a black trainer suit with a red R in front. What interests Red most are the pokemons hanging around the belts. The boy then crouches in the tall grasses and overhears the men talk about their plan to capture a rare and exotic pokemon in the forest that night. Right there and then, Red decides to make that pokemon his own.

It is night time in the forest west to Pallet Town and Red has brought with him an armful of pokeballs. He hasn't ventured too far in the woods when he spots another boy his own age wearing a purple sweater facing off a white pokemon with his Charmander. The white pokemon has very lean features with a long tail and a pair of big eyes. It seems to float in the air and glow in the dark and Red realizes its something he has never seen before. The boy in purple orders another fire attack from the Charmander but the white pokemon counters with a storm of sparks. Red is still enjoying the show when the other boy suddenly withdraws his little fire lizard. Red leaps out from the bush and yells at the boy for giving up so easily. The other pays little attention to him and Red releases his Poliwhirl to face off the mysterious pokemon. He orders a water gun attack but the white pokemon returns the attack and knocks the blue frog out in one hit before flying off.

Red is shocked at his defeat and the other boy coldly remarks that a good trainer should be able to spot the huge difference in strength while facing off an opponent. He tells Red that upon his second attempt to attack, he has already realized his Charmander was no match to the wild one. He shoots a look of disdain at Red and tells him to have a better sense next time before walking off into the woods. Red, on the other hand, is still nursing his Poliwhirl on the floor, unable to believe his own defeat.

Not long after, the men in black suits are searching through the forest and they see the mass destruction done to the grass land, apparently caused by a fierce pokemon battle. One guy approaches Red, who's still upset and on the ground, and questions him about the whereabouts of the exotic pokemon, Mew. No response comes from Red but the other members of the gang have spotted a trail left behind by Mew and the whole group gives chase.

Morning has arrived in Pallet and Red finds himself wandering hestitantly in front of Prof. Oak's lab. He takes out his pokemon with his fainted Poliwhirl inside and decides that meeting the professor is the only way he knows right now to further his pokemon skills and knowledge. Red walks up to the lab's door, extends his shaky hand, and reaches for the doorbell...

 Red finally makes up his mind to meet Prof. Oak and has come to the old man's door. Unfortunately, no one seems to respond to the doorbell ringing and so Red tries on the door knob. To his surpise, it is not locked and the boy decides to venture into the lab and wait for the professor inside. The professor's lab is filled with machines and pokeballs all over. Red picks up one ball and sees a Bulbasaur inside. He brings it up to meet his Poliwhirl, which is also in a pokeball and the Bulbasaur seems to have a look of agitation on its face.

Just then, the door swings open and Prof. Oak steps into the room. The old man immediately deems Red a burglar and walks up to grab him. Red backs away and accidentally pushes a release button on one of Oak's machines. This causes all the pokeballs to snap open and the pokemons inside instantly flee and run. Within seconds, the whole lab is crowded with Pidgeys, Rattattas and all sort of bug pokemons, some even crack through the window and escape from the lab. Oak's face turns red with fury and he is about to yell at Red when an escaped Pidgey flies above him and drops a blob of dump on his forehead. The professor goes mad and demands the boy to retrieve all the lost pokemons immediately. Red complies and within half an hour, most pokemons have been recaptured and Oak says they should be going after the ones that escaped through the window. Red makes his way to the door but the professor grabs him and says he would be going with him, for fear that he would flee.

The sun is about to set when Red and Prof. Oak, who rode on a bike, arrive in Viridian City. They immediately spot an escaped Meowth and return it to its pokeball, and the professor happily says that they are down to one. After searching through the city for a little longer, the two see the last pokmon that fled, Bulbasaur, standing right in front of the abandoned Viridian Gym, but the little seed pokemon rushes into the building to hide as soon as it sees them. Oak and Red enter the gym and see spider webs hanging all over the dusty place, and find Bulbasaur crouching at a dark corner glaring at them. The professor walks up to it and prepares to retrieve it when the pokemon tackles him in the stomach. Oak wonders what has caused Bulbasaur's sudden hostile behavior. Red walks up to it with an understanding look and says it is probably sick of staying in the lab all day and wants to see the world outside. He explains that he realizes that when he saw Bulbasaur's look upon meeting his own Poliwhirl. Oak is still confused but Bulbasaur happily trot up to Red and the boy pats it on the head.

Suddenly, the three hear a deep growl from behind and turn to find a furious wild Machoke looking at them. The fighting pokemon charges at Red and the Oak as the two dodge and flee. The Machoke is about to throw a punch at Red's face when Bulbasaur releases a bundle of vines to strangle its arms. Red marvels at Bulbasaur's skills but turns to see that the professor has already been knocked out. The Machoke breaks off the vines and edges Red and Bulbasaur to a corner. Red is still trying to come up with a strategy when he notices sunlight pouring through the cracks of the wooden windows behind him. Without much thought, he swings them open and wide just as the seed on Bulbasaur's back glows and instantly releases a blinding beam towards the Machoke, fainting it.

Apparently, Oak has awaken by the time and sees the whole thing. He compliments on Red for knowing Bulbasaur's strongest attack, Solar Beam, but the boy confesses that he doesn't and just rationalizes that plants grow stronger with sunlight. Oak lets out a big laugh and tells Red that he can take Bulbasaur with him. The boy is overjoyed and tells Oak that he visited his lab that morning to ask him about what it takes to become a great pokemon trainer. The professor turns around, closes his eyes, and has Red think on the question for a while. He then explains that power and skills alone would not serve to make a trainer strong, but a caring heart and devotion to one's own pokemons are the keys to success.

Oak asks Red his name, then fumbles out a Pokedex from his lab coat and hands it to the boy. He explains that the dex records the data of all pokemons Red would come across and remarks that by the time the dex is complete, Red would be the ultimate pokemon trainer...

 Red has earned Prof. Oak's recognition as a pokemon trainer and received a Pokedex from the professor. Oak says that different pokemons inhabit different areas in the world and he suggests the boy head towards Viridian Forest to begin his quest to become the ultimate pokemon trainer. The professor is about to say something more but then pauses and brushes it aside. A few moments later, Red arrives at the entrance to the forest and ensures that he has brought along some pokeballs with him. He then releases Poliwhirl and Bulbasaur to walk alongside and dreams about the many kinds of pokemons he would come across.

Deep in the Viridian Forest, the boy in purple sweater that Red met earlier stands calmly in the woods with his eyes closed and listens to the movements of the wild pokemon he is tracking. A muffle comes from a nearby bush and he snaps his eyes open and orders an ember attack from his Charmander towards the source of the sound. A thud immediately follows and the boy walks up to see that he has fainted a wild Venomoth. He checks on his Pokedex and realizes that he already owns one, then leaves it behind and continues with his search.

Meanwhile, Red is fervently looking around for a wild Caterpie but can't seem is find any. He sees a sudden movement in the bush and tells Poliwhirl, which he calls Poli, to charge in. But as he makes his way through the bush not long after, he is surprised to see Poli burnt and fainted on the ground. Red looks up to find a Charmander and the boy in purple sweater. The boy chuckles and says he didn't realize it was a trainer's pokemon because it was awfully weak and this immediately ticks Red off. Red charges towards the boy but the other easily blocks his punch and calls him an illiterate who only knows how to use brutal force. It is only then that Red recognizes the boy as the same one he met earlier on the night he encountered Mew.

Suddenly, the ground begins to shake and the two turn to find a wild Kangaskhan heading towards them. Red excalims at its size while the other boy smirks and remarks that it is the pokemon he was searching for. The boy orders his Charmander to attack and pulls out his Pokedex exactly the same time Red does. Both are shocked at the sight but the other boy immediately bursts out in laughter and says that he couldn't believe that it was Red his grandfather was talking about when he told him that only one other person besides himself received a Pokedex. Red, on the other hand, is shocked to learn that the boy is Oak's grandson.

The boy says it is a waste to give a Pokedex to people like Red and tells him to learn from great pokemon trainers like himself. He orders his Charmander to power up the flames and prepares to attempt a capture. He aims the pokeball right at the back of the Kangaskhan but the large pokemon turns around just in time to swipe it off. The boy tries a second time but to no avail again. While he commands his little fire lizard to power up the fire attacks even more, Red notices that the Kangaskhan does not retaliate at all but always turns its pouch away from the fire. He immediately realizes something is wrong with the infant pokemon inside. He tries to get the other boy to stop and when the other wouldn't, Red releases his Poliwhirl to put out the flames and water gun the Charmander. The other boy yells in rage after him as Red runs up to the severely burnt Kangaskhan. A baby Kangaskhan pops up weakly from the pouch and Red realizes that it has been poisoned by some poison pokemons in the area. He heals it with some antidote and praises the parent pokemon for its care of the child. The Kangaskhan lets out a gentle smile and turns to go back into the woods.

The other boy is still upset and angry over not being able to capture the pokemon but Red tells him that it is immoral to capture a pokemon when you have the upperhand. The other boy snorts and begins to walk away when Red runs after him to introduce himself. At first the boy gives no response when Red asks about his name but eventually gets annoyed by the other's persistance and turns around to impatiently introduce himself as Green. Red yells out from behind that he is going to train hard and would not lose to Green if they should meet again someday. Green continues to walk off annoyed and the two take their separate ways. Behind some trees and bushes not far away, Prof. Oak watches the two part and secretly hopes that they would both one day return as great pokemon trainers...

 In the western city known as Pewter, the villagers are running around with lures and large nets as Red enters the streets. He picks up a notice with a Pikachu under the words WANTED on it and realizes the people are trying to ensnare the little electric mouse pokemon lurking around. Two blocks away, the villagers have cornered the wild Pikachu to a wall and are about to throw on the nets when the pokemon hops away and grabs an apple from the market stalls. One man crawls up behind it and successfully traps it with a net, only to get shocked and knocked out by its electric attacks afterwards. The Pikachu wiggles free and leaps away again as the villagers continue to give chase. Red watches all this from afar and decides to render some help. He pulls out a pokeball and releases his Bulbasaur, Saur, and this immediately catches the Pikachu's attention as it turns and prepares to battle. The electric mouse lets out a thundershock and the villagers are worried that the grass pokemon wouldn't stand against the attack, but Saur remains almost intact after the smoke clears and it proceeds to release a sleep powder on Pikachu, putting it to drowsiness. Red then throws a pokeball and traps the wild pokemon in it without much effort.

A few moments later, Red is enjoying an extravagant meal prepared by the villagers for him. The people explain that the Pikachu he just captured has been stealing goods and causing all sorts of troubles in the city and they're thankful that he has helped them solve the problem. Red tells them that he came from Pallet and is on his quest to become a great pokemon trainer. He shows off his Pokedex and explains its feature while all the villagers look on, amazed by such a high-tech device. After the meal, Red pulls out the pokeball with Pikachu in it and tries to figure out an appropraite way to make friends with the obviously antagonistic little creature.

Later, out on a piece of grassland, Red is still trying every way he could to befriend Pikachu, but the pokemon pays no interest other than shocking the boy every now and then. A disdainful laugh comes from behind and Red turns to find Green with a look of mockery on his face again. Green remarks that he feels ashamed to have such kind of rivals and Red stands up fuming, ready to face off the arrogant boy. But then, Green steps back with a grin and says he wouldn't waste his efforts here when he has signed up for a challenge at the Pewter Gym the next day. He tells Red that the gymleader, Brock, is looking for new challengers and it would be a great chance to win the Boulder Badge. Apparently, Red knows nothing about badges and Green explains that the Boulder Badge has the mysterious ability to increase the attack of pokemons, without forgetting to insult Red as an inept and illiterate trainer at the end.

Red starts to get mad again and Green suggests they make use of the opporunity to test out their skills, that whomever wins the Boulder Badge first wins this first round of rivalry. Red agrees without hesitation and Green remarks that electric rats like Pikachu stand no chance against the rock pokemons of Brock. The arrogant boy then drops the leaflet of the gym and turns to walk away. Red picks the paper up and learns that the challenge starts at 12 noon the next day. He takes out his pokeballs containing Poli and Saur, which are both quite low in HP, and decides to visit the PokemonCenter first thing in the morning.

Unfortunately, when Red arrives at the PokemonCenter the next day, his discovers the place is closed and a notice is put up saying that the centre is under maintenance due to an unexpected attack by some strangers the night before. Red starts to get worried and nervously looks at the unfriendly Pikachu in its pokeball, which is the only pokemon he possesses that has full HP...

 It is noon at Pewter City and Red is hurrying on his way to the gym for his first gym challenge. He enters the battle arena and finds the crowd cheering for a match on stage. He sees Green facing off an opponent with his evolved Charmeleon and stops to watch for a while, then remembers that he is running late for his match and hurries off to block B for his own challenge. As Red steps on stage, the crowds murmurs how the gymleader would observe the matches from his room and grant the opportunity to challenge to himself only to the trainer that beats all the others.

Red's first opponent is a tough-looking guy with a Graveller who looks down on the boy. Red tries to get Pikachu to comly but the little mouse turns its head away. Left with no choice, Red resolves to Poli, who is already extremely low in HP and the guy immediately sees it as an easy victory. The bell goes off and Red has Poli use water gun followed by an ice beam that almost instantly takes out the Graveller. The guy gasps in shock and surprise while Red prays that his pokemons attack would take out the all opponents in one hit because Poli and Saur would faint in no time if they receive any sort of attacks.

Red's Poli and Saur go on to knock out various pokemons including Cubone and Sandshrew and is finally ready for the challenge against Brock. The gymleader walks down from his waiting room where he watches over all the battles with his Geodude, Graveller and Onix and makes his way to the stage. Red excuses himself from the battle arena for a while and begs Pikachu to help him out while crouching in front of the gym backdoor, but the pokemon continuesto ignore him. Back inside, the boy has successfully made Pikachu stand on stage but the little rat remains perky and indifferent. Brock releases his Onix and has it attack with a rock throw. Pikachu dances around and dodges most of the rocks but eventually gets hit on the head by a small one. Its eyes glare with rage and the crowd thinks it is going to retaliate with brutal force, but Pikachu surprises everyone by chasing after Red and shocking him instead.

Brock gets mad at this and thinks that Red is not taking the challenge seriously, and orders Onix to use its ultimate attack, Skull Bash. The giant rock snake twirls its body into a spiral and thrashes in a spin, heading straight for Pikachu. Red sees this and jumps in to push the electric mouse out of the way, narrowly avoiding the attack. Pikachu looks up at its trainer in shock, and remembers all things the boy has done to try to befriend him. Red then lets out a faint smile and says he really lacks the ability to be a convincing trainer. Brock, on the other hand, has ordered Onix to launch another attack and the giant pokemon comes charging at the two again. Pikachu suddenly steps up with a determined look and charges a storm of electricity around itself. It then throws the thunderbolts towards the attacking pokemon and zaps it into pieces, fainting it. This shocks literally everyone in the room as Brock drops to his kness, stunned by his own defeat. Pikachu dances around happily as the announcer walks up to declare Red as the winner.

The sun is setting and Red sits on the grassland outside the gym with all the pokemons out beside him. It turns out that only Green and himself have earned the Boulder Badge at the end and they would wait until next time to settle their rivalry. The boy stares at the shimmering grey badge and thanks Pikachu for helping him out. He introduces the little electric mouse to Poli and Saur and says they would be working together as a team from now on. He extends his hand to Pikachu and the little creature accepts it with a smiling face. But then, the smile turns into an evil grin and it starts shocking Red and chasing him around again as Poli and Saur look on...

 The wind blows across the plains of the Pewter countryside and a battered Misty slowly crawls up to her feet to face off a fierce Gyarados gapping its mouth wide in front of her. She orders a hydropump from her Staryu but the atrocious creature retaliates with the same attack and knocks out the star-shaped pokemon. Suddenly, Red appears behind the orange-haired girl and offers to help. Misty is about to warn him of the danger but Red has already released his Bulbasaur, Saur, and goes on to introduce himself. The Gyarados releases another hydropump and Misty looks on, worried, but to her surprise, the little seed pokemon appears to be enjoying the water and Red remarks that water attack does little damage to grass pokemons.

The boy orders Saur to use leech seed and the water dragon is instantly entangled in vines. Misty stares in awe at the techinique, then proceeds to tell her Staryu to recover, which to Red's surprise, heals all the wounds on the star-shaped pokemons flat little body. Meanwhile, the Gyarados has broken free of the constraining vines and is about to attack again. Red and Misty decide to join forces on their final attack as Saur launches a vine whip and Staryu releases a bubblebeam. The double assault knocks the Gyarados to near unconscious and Red hurls out a pokeball just in time to capture the pokemon. Misty stares at all this wordless in disbelief for a moment, and thanks Red for his help. She then goes on to say it's an embarrassing situation and asks the boy if he has thought about why a wild water pokemon like Gyarados would end up on the plains. Red seems to be confused about this as well and Misty decides to reveal to him that the Gyarados is in fact not a wild pokemon but belongs to her.

The girl further explains that someone stole her Gyarados one week ago and by the time it returns, it has turned totally ferocious and out of control. She says that she was trying to tame the pokemon when Red arrives at the scene earlier and once again thanks him for the help. Red, with his heroic attitude, immediately offers to track the culprits and is about to walk off when Misty reminds him that not even herself knows who were behind it. Red pauses to think for a while and suggests asking Prof. Oak for information.

A few moments later, the two arrive at the Pewter Pokemoncentre and Red tries to connect to Oak via a visual phone system. The professor's face appears on the screen after a while and Red introduces the old man to Misty. Oak greets them both and asks about the progress of the Pokedex. Red shows him the new information he collected of Gyarados and brags to Misty about the high-tech features of the machine as well as his quest to become the ultimate trainer with its help. Oak gets a little annoyed at Red's self-absorption and is about close the connection when Red remembers the reason they called the professor and asks him about known burglars of pokemons. Oak reveals to the two that several stealings have been reported in recent days and he believes that Team Rocket is behind all of them. He explains that Rocket is an underground evil association known to perform biological experiments on pokemons. He suggests Red visit Mt. Moon to the east of Pewter if he wishes to track the gang's activities, because the place houses the rare moonstones for certain pokemon evolutions which the Rockets would definitely be after.

Red and Misty leave the Pokemoncentre and the boy gets upset about all the interventions to his plan to become a great trainer. Misty tells him that she would go along to Mt. Moon with him because her city, Cerulean, lies in the same direction and she wishes to find out more about Team Rocket. Red warns her of the danger ahead but the girl pulls out a bunch of pokemons and Red sees that apart from the Gyarados and Staryu, she also owns various other water pokemons like Starmie. Misty explains that she is a also a trainer that specializes in water pokemons and that it would be a great help to face off the rock types in the caves of Mt. Moon. She extends her hand to formally introduce herself and Red takes it with an embarrassing look on his face. The two then head east towards the mystical Mt. Moon...

 Outside the caves of Mount Moon, the ground is sprawled with the gang of men in black suit that Red encountered in the Pallet woods. One of them is receiving orders via a walkie-talkie to scout for the mysterious moonstones and kill any intruders that get in their way. The rest of the team continue with their search in the maze of trees and rocks. Meanwhile, Red and Misty arrive at the place and immediately spot the gang outside the caves. Misty tells Red to scoot down in the bushes as they try to overhear what the men are talking about. Red says he recognizes their outfit and Misty remarks that they are probably members of Team Rocket. Red remembers the moonstone and is determined to get one of the rare evolutionary rock himself. The two slowly crawl their way around the TR men and make it into the caves.

A Zubat silently wings past Red and Misty in the darkness and the girl says they wouldn't be able to find anything with such poor vision. Red fumbles at his belt and releases his Pikachu, Pika, who still wears an attitude on its face when it pops out of the ball, and Misty worries that it is not very friendly. Red assures her that the little electric mouse is very good at acting and tells it to use flash. Pika charges up its tail and the room is instantly lit up with a bright light. The two continue to walk through the caves as more Zubats fly by. Red has turned around to joke with Misty when his back suddenly hits something hard and rocky. But no sooner has the boy complained about the geology of the place that the two realize it wasn't rocks that got in their way but a Rhyhorn that's glaring at them with gleaming eyes. A TR member wearing a ninja scarf appears next to the spiky pokemon and remarks that they would not let little kids interfere with their great plans. More TR members flood into the room and Red walks up to confront the guy with the scarf, who's apparently the leader in this expedition.

The man orders a rock throw from the Rhyhorn and the tumbling blocks immediately knock Pika back and bury it in big boulders, but a few seconds later a spark cuts through the rocks and the little rat hops out, twirls the boulders into rotation, and hurls them right back at its attacker, nearly fainting it. The TR man grins with surprise and says that Team Rocket always has back-up plans. He pulls out a syringe from his belt, plucks it into the Rhyhorn's back, and the creature instantly evolves into a ferocious Rhydon. Red and Misty stare in disbelief and the girl realizes her Gyarados must have been stolen by these same men and received a similar type of injection which accounts for its sudden change in behaviour. Her face reddens with fury and she orders a water gun from her Staryu which knocks the Rhydon back, but the TR guy has the drill pokemon retaliate with a horn drill that sends the stream of water surging back towards the two and knocks Misty unconscious against a wall.

Red starts to get mad as well and orders Pika to charge forward. The Rhydon stomps on the little rat and keeps hurling rocks towards the boy, but Pika protects itself against the big pokemon's weight with it sparks and slowly charges up an electric field to topple the Rhydon over. It then leaps high up and starts zapping the rocks above the TR members. The TR man is about to laugh at Pika's futile acts when he realizes the little rat to trying to set loose the ceiling over them. The top of the cave soon cracks and gives way to a huge boulder that plummets right between the Rockets and Red. With the enemies trapped on the other side of the boulder, Red quickly gathers up Pika and Misty and makes a run to the cave exit.

Outside the cave, Misty slowly awakes and is furious to find herself all muddy and dirty. The two start to make their way towards Cerulean but Misty is upset that they didn't manage to find the mysterious moonstone. Red giggles and pulls out a rock with a crescent moon carving on it. Misty is surprised and Red explains that he spotted the stone lying in a little pit after the ceiling fell off. Misty cheers up at the news and the two happily run off towards the next city, Cerulean...

 In the water city of Cerulean, Red and Misty has arrived at the big and grand mansion Misty lives in. Red gawks in awe as a line of beautiful maids come up to greet them and Misty introduces the boy to the ladies. A few moments later, Red has changed into a comfortable robe while his clothes are being tended by the maids and his pokemons being healed at Misty's private HP regenerating machine. Red makes his way to the dining hall and is shocked to see all the well-dressed guests as well as the extravagant layout of the room. Misty soon enters wearing an elegant silk dress and commences the dinner.

Half way through the meal, Red is still fervently talking about his journey so far as well as the battle against the Rockets at Mt. Moon, and all the guests seem genuinely entertained. Misty comments that people should try not to talk during meals but Red brushes it off with a laugh. Misty goes on to say that he should get enough rest that night because they will be starting on their special training the next day. Red gets confused and Misty explains that their strength right now is still no match against TR, especially the man with the ninja scarf at Mt. Moon, and that they would need to heighten their battling skills to help rid the evil. Red puts up an arrogant look and says he doesn't need any training as he believes in his own strength. Misty warns him of the greater danger TR houses but Red remarks that Misty simply didn't see his strength and skills because she fainted during their battle at Mt. Moon. This immediately outrages Misty and she runs off to her room teary-eyed.

Late in the evening that night, Red is lying on the bed talking to his pokemons about his plans to go out on dates with Misty's beautiful maids when the lights suddenly go off and a tornado sweeps in from the window, hurling everything in the room including the boy into a spin. Red's Bulbasaur, Saur, hops out from its pokeball and immediately grabs its trainer with his vines to pull him down. A shadowy figure appears briefly at the window and the wind dies down as quick as it comes. Red looks around his damaged room and wonders what could have caused the tornado when he spots a Gyarados scale lying on the floor.

The next morning by the light of day, Red is having breakfast at the dining room pondering on the events the night before. The maids look at him baffled and the boy reassures them that he is fine. He tells them that he will let them witness his strength later that day after his date with them because he will be challenging at the Cerulean Gym. The maids go silent for a moment after hearing this and burst out laughing. Red is still wondering what's so funny about his words when Misty enters the room with a dignified look and suggests him make the challenge now. The boy agrees and Misty takes him out of the mansion and into the woods. Red wonders why the gym is so far away from the city centre but Misty reassures him that it lies just at the border of the Cerulean.

A few moments later the two arrive at the Cerulean Gym and Misty invites Red in with a cold stare. The boy wonders what has caused the girl's sudden hostility as he follows her to the last room along the corridor. The two enter the empty room and Red asks Misty where the gymleader is, and the girl defiantly unveils herself to be the one he's looking for. Red still thinks Misty is joking but the girl has released her Starmie and ordered a water attack. The boy runs and dodges while the girl further reveals that it was her that attacked him the night before. Red starts to get mad and releases Saur to retaliate. He orders a vine whip but Misty has Stamie knock the two back with a strong bubblebeam. Red wonders why the girl has suddenly grew so strong and he suddenly realizes she is standing there motionless, trembling with soft sobs.

Misty replies with a cracked voice that she wishes Red would understand more of her reasons for having special training. She begins to burst out in tears and remarks that she lacks the skill to pull off effective attacks during intense battles like the one in Mt. Moon and that if don't take the matter seriously, they could never survive a combat against the enemies. She says she wishes Red would train with her for a while to exchange their different strength and skills, and slowly drops to the floor wiping her eyes. Red realizes the girl's good intentions and decides to put his journey on hold for a while as he extends his hand to help her up. He says he would cancel all his dates with the maids and focus on training with her in the coming days as the girl's face lightens up with joy.

One week later, Misty and Red shake hands outside her mansion and the boy prepares to continue with his quest to become the ultimate pokemon trainer. The maids ask why Misty is letting him go so soon and the girl says the two of them have come to fully learn all the special skills and tactics they each possess in the past week and that the rest would be up to their own training. The girl looks over the plains and ponders on their next meeting as Red waves goodbye with his pokemons from afar, the Boulder and Cascade badges reflecting the sunlight in front of his black T-shirt...

 In his little house by the river near the border of Cerulean, the young and gifted inventor known as Bill is trying to fix the Pokemon Transfer Machine he has created for trainers all over the world. Crawling into a bullet-shaped cell of the high-tech machine, the young man moans how delicate inventions always take time to manage. Yet he fails to notice that the hook on the cell door has caught the tail of his shirt, and as he moves deeper into the confined little space, the door slams shut and auto-locks with a snap. Bill freaks out immediately and bangs around in the strong confinement of the cell helplessly as he watches the auto-timer slowly counts down. In an adjacent cell, a little Rattatta looks on, confused.

Out in the woods between Route 24 and 25, another pokeball falls off from Red's belt as the boy bends down to pick it up with an annoyed look on his face and complains how inconvenient it is to carry around so many pokeballs. Since his departure from Misty's mansion, Red has encountered various wild pokemons and made plenty of successful captures. He stuffs the fallen ball back in line with at least a dozen other pokeballs on his belt and notices an odd looking Rattatta walking by, pulling on a small piece of log with a rope. Red silently crawls up behind the funny creature that looks to have a human face, thinks of it as a rare specie of the Rattatta line and digs out a new pokeball to attempt a capture. Just then, the weird little thing starts talking to itself and the boy instantly freaks and bolts up from the bushes he's hiding in. The creature immediately spins around to calm the boy down and assures him that itself is a human being.

It turns out that the creature is Bill and he explains to Red about his merging with a Rattatta due to an accident in the Pokemon Transfer Machine. He introduces himself as a famous inventor and pokemon critic and just as he's about to go on bragging about his works, a Fearow swoops down from the sky and sweeps him up with its claws. Apparently the bird has mistaken Bill for a real Rattatta and the disfigured young man cries out for help. Red takes a look at his three still confused pokemon, Pika, Poli and Saur, and decides to help the man anyway.

Red orders a razor leaf from Saur but the Fearow soars even higher to dodge the spinning leaves. Bill yells out that the best way to take down a flyer is to freeze its wings or paralyze it and that grass attacks would be useless. Red withdraws Saur as Pika and Poli release a combined ice beam and thunder wave, but the bird tilts itself and the attacks hit Bill instead. Frustrated, Red gives chase after the Fearow and thinks on a strategy when Bill shouts out that the boy has to find some way to halt the bird's flight. Red gets an idea when he spots a cluster of dark clouds in the sky. He orders Pika to leap high up in the air and the little rat starts sending sparks to the clouds. This immediately triggers a thunder and zaps right down at the Fearow. The bird plunges to the ground in front of Red while Bill is thrown onto the edge of a cliff.

The boy walks up to examine the bird but it suddenly gets up screeching and prepares to attack. Bill looks down from the cliff as the bird starts to twirl itself into a spiral and the young man recognizes the move as the dangerous drill peck. He shouts out warnings to Red and the boy stands his ground alongside Poli, with a determined look on his face. Bill covers his eyes with its Rattatta hands as he watches the sharp beak of the spinning Fearow pierce right into the Poliwhirl, but a few seconds later he opens his eyes to discover that the bird has actually been frozen from its beak. It turns out that Poli has fooled the Fearow with a double team and frozen it with an ice beam. The young scientist sighs with relief as the boy chuckles light-heartedly.

Later, back at Bill's little house, Red pushes a handle on the delicate machine and lights begin to flash between the two bullet-like cells of the Pokemon Transfer Machine. A few moments later Bill emerges from one of the cells in his human form and thanks the boy for his help. Bill demonstrates the feature of the machine and explains that it can transfer both pokemons and items away for storage. The two formally introduce themselves to each other and Red tells Bill of his dream to become the ultimate pokemon trainer. Bill compliments on his great endeavor and says the machine and storage system should come in handy for him. He says that Red should lighten his load and rips a pokeball off the boy's belt, only to discover it contains the Fearow that attacked him earlier. The young man slips in fear and lands his bottoms on the floor as Red watches all this with a chuckle...

 Red stretches out and breathes in the fresh air as he arrives at the seaport city of Vermillion. The boy looks towards the harbour from the green meadows he's standing on and spots a luxurious liner with the name S.S. Anne printed on the side of the hull. He decides to check it out and dashes towards the seaside as Pika, Poli and Saur trot along happily. A few moments later, Red arrives at the harbour and is amazed by the size of S.S.Anne. A sailor walks by with a big box over his right shoulder and the boy decides to sneak into the ship by creeping alongside the big man under his right side. The man is preoccupied by his heavy-load lifting and never takes his eyes off his way, and this gives Red the chance to board the liner without anyone's notice. Once on board, the boy ventures along the corridors and finds stashes of boxes all over the place. Red thinks he saw some movement in the boxes for a moment but then decides he's just imagining it. He continues to walk down the corridor as something catches his eye in one of the rooms. He peeks into the oval window of the door but sees nothing in the dark room. Suddenly, the shadow of a mass creature looms into view and it roars at the face of the boy. Red falls back immediately and the noise causes sailors to flood in. They yell that the liner is currently restricted to non-crew passengers and kick the boy off the deck.

Sitting on the ground holding his painful bottom, Red hisses at the hostility of the sailors and wonders what pokemon it was that lurked inside the dark room. Suddenly, an odd-looking man in suit and hat with big sunglasses and a stick walks up to the boy from behind and asks him if he possesses any pokemons. Red says he does and the bearded little man fervently urges the boy to show him. Confused and annoyed, Red releases Pika, Poli and Saur as the little man's face lits up with stars. The man introduces himself as the president of the Pokemon Fan Club and immediately admits Red as his premium member.

Later, at the clubhouse of the Pokemon Fan Club, Red enters with the president to find a room full of pokefans. The boy watches the people exchange news of their own pokemons as the president stuffs the newest issue of their club magazine in his hands. The funny little man introduces Red as the newest premium member of the club to everyone in the room and in a matter of seconds, people's hands are all over Pika, Poli and Saur. A young woman asks Red how long has he owned Poli and the boy explains that he grew up with it when it was still a Poliwag and that it has helped him a lot throughout the years after its evolution, especially in battles recently. This remark gets the whole room silent. The president slowly walks up to Red and ask him if he really uses pokemons in battle and the boy nods. The man explains that the members of the club never engages their pokemons in battles, then embarrassingly says that as a result their pokemons are always weak.

The door suddenly slams open as a man rushes in and exclaims that his Exeggcutor has gone missing. Everyone in the room put on a serious look as the president sadly turns away to look at a photo on his desk. The people explains to Red that the president's Abra has been stolen a month ago and since then, more and more pokemons have vanished into thin air. The president breaks into tears and Red decides to help find the missing pokemons. The people says that the mass pokemon disappearances occur once every month and the boy wonders what means would the culprits use to house and transport away such a large amount of pokemons. He looks out of the window to see S.S. Anne and asks about the liner. One man explains that the ship belongs to the gymleader Lt. Surge and that he ships goods to Cinnabar Island once every month. Red remembers the strange creature he encountered on board and decides the liner must have something to do with the pokemon disappearances. He is about to leave and investigate when the president stops him and says he has one final request. Red listens intently to the man, only to hear that he simply wants to hold and play with Pika when the boy goes off to the ship.

Leaving behind Pika with the odd president, Red climbs onto the luxurious liner, S.S. Anne, with the help of Poli and Saur's vines. He tries to locate the room he encountered the dark creature but finds himself lost amid the countless doorways. Red finally finds the room he is looking for and he enters to see a pokeball lying on the floor. He bends down to pick it up, only to discover that it's actually a Voltorb as the ball pokemon zaps him. Poli sends it away with a water gun and Red wipes the sweat off his forehead, remarking that everything on the ship is treacherous. Suddenly, Poli collapses to the floor and the boy hurries over to hold it as an evil laughter echoes the little room. Red turns around to see Lt. Surge towering over him and the big man grins that the boy failed to realize whenever a water pokemon hits an electric pokemon with a water attack, the electricity would conduct through the water and hurt the attacker at the same time. Voltorbs, Electrodes, Magnemites and Magnetons begin to fill the room and the gymleader says unwelcomed intruders would be seriously punish on S.S. Anne. Red holds onto his nearly fainting Poli and glares in fury at the man...

 On board the luxurious liner, S.S. Anne, Red and his Poli are surrounded by a gang of electric pokemons led by Lt. Surge as the sailors flood into the room. The gymleader promises a torturous punishment for the boy and questions his reasons for intruding. Red defiantly accuses Lt. Surge and his crew of stealing pokemons from the residents in Vermillion and the man laughs it off by saying they are simply helping the creatures out of their misery in a boring city of peace. Red gets up and prepares to face off the gymleader but the man says the boy stands no chance against the pokemon he has appointed to guard the liner. The shadowy creature Red met earlier appears behind Lt. Surge as the man says pokeballs can't even restrain this pokemon and that the boy wouldn't be able to survive a single attack. An electrabuzz looms into view as the handcuffs on its limbs snap open and the creature roars and hurls a thunderpunch towards Red. The boy narrowly escapes the attack and is shocked to find the ground of the room charred and cracked in an instant.

Poli secretly opens its eyes and begins to send a small pool of water towards Lt. Surge and his Electrabuzz on the floor as Red continues to stare down his opponents. Lt. Surge gives another grin and orders the electric pokemon to attack again but Red suddenly orders Poli to fire an ice bream and freeze the water under his opponents' feet. With the gymleader and the Electrabuzz both immobile, Red throws in a ball which explodes into a cloud of smoke and takes the chance to escape the room. Out on the deck, Red and Poli hides behind some cargo around the corner and the boy compliments on his pokemon's great work. The two look around to check on their pursuers but find only Magnemites scouting back and fro on the corridors. Red carries Poli on his back and silently crawls under the Magnemites to avoid being seen, but what he doesn't know is that Lt. Surge has already located him by the hidden cameras installed on the liner. A Magneton approaches the boy from behind and releases a sonic attack. The defeaning sound causes the boy to hold his ears as he feels his Poli being yanked away from him. The screeching stops and Red looks up to see Lt. Surge holding his Poli by the arm, with Electrabuzz behind him.

The gymleader grins again and tosses the Poliwhirl into the ocean. Red bolts up to stop him but three Magnetons release an electric field to confine him. The boy watches his pokemon plummet into the sea helplessly as Lt. Surge reminds him not to mess around with other people's business next time. The Electrabuzz then charges itself up and zaps the boy with a mighty thunderbolt, leaving the boy battered and unconscious. Lt. Surge grins a final time and orders the Magnetons to release the field, and the boy drops silently into the waters of Vermillion.

As Red sinks deeper and deeper into the ocean, he remembers how his Poli saved him once in his childhood when he nearly drowned in the river. His thoughts start to become blurry as a shadow approaches him. Back on S.S. Anne, Lt. Surge wonders if the boy is dead when a Poliwrath leaps out of the waters with Red under its right arm. The big blue frog places its trainer back on deck as the stunned gymleader orders another attack from his Electrabuzz. Powered up from its evolution, Poli wipes off the attack with a blow and charges towards the electric pokemon. The two clasp hands and arms as Lt. Surge prepares to make an escape. Poli's arm muscles slowly bulge out and it releases a seismic toss, crashing Electrabuzz into the gymleader and sending the two off the deck. Red awakes and stares in astonishment.

A few hours later, police are all over the luxurious liner and arresting all its crew members, but the gymleader is nowhere to be found. Members of the Pokemon Fan Club are overjoyed to find their lost pokemons in the cargo of the ship, but Red is still fuzzy about the things that happened. The president of the club rushes up to the boy and says his Poli looks as cute after its evolution, then fervently asks about his lost Abra. Red puts up a troubled smile on his face and reveals to the man that his Abra has evolved all the way to Alakazam while it was held captive. The odd-looking man immediately collapses to the ground as the members of the club gather around their awe-struck president...

 Out on Route 11, a cycling competition organized by the bike company Miracle Cycle is about is start. The announcer introduces the rules and shows on a map that the course extends from Route 11 all the way to the wooden planks along the water on Route 12. He hints to the contestants that somewhere in the woods of Route 11 lies a shortcut, but they'll have discover it on their own. Red waits along the starting line on his bike with the other contestants and as the announcer commences the race, all cyclers instantly dash out in a flock. After his showdown with Lt. Surge on S.S. Anne, Red has learnt that the winner of the race will be awarded an HM, and therefore spent 3000 yen to take part in the competition. The president of the Pokemon Fan Club has presented him a bike voucher for the vehicle, but unfortunately he was given an old-fashioned one that lacks speed, and thus he ends up way behind the other contestants. After pushing himself hard enough to catch up with the others, Red soon finds a group of cyclers halting in front, waiting for something. It turns out that the course spans over a river and only a single narrow bridge is there for crossing. Red wonders why the contestants don't waddle through the shallow water and a young man points out to him that the waters are inhabited by ferocious Tentacruels. A swimmer with the number tag 20 in front of his chest laughs and says he will gain the upperhand here as he releases a Slowpoke and surfs on its back to cross the river. Red realizes using pokemon skills is allowed and releases Poli. The blue frog fires an ice beam on the river surface and creates an ice path, which the boy gracefully crosses over as the other contestants stare in awe. Having a lot of time spared, Red continues on the road when he spots a cycler steer off course and into the woods ahead of him. He realizes it must be the secret shortcut and decides to follow. He spots a bugcatcher spraying repel over himself and the little kid snobbishly tells him that no cycler can make it through the dense forest without repels to ward off the bugs. Watching the bugcatcher enter the woods with his Scyther, Red suddenly gets an idea. He releases Pika on his back and has it fend off the attacking bugs with its thundershocks as he makes his way through the trees and bushes. He also has Saur crouch in front of him and clear the path ahead with its razor leaves. Suddenly, Red crashes through some trees and a Beedrill nest falls on the head of Saur. The boy smells danger and is proven right when a swarm of angry Beedrills start chasing after him. The three emerges from the forest with stings all over them and Saur is completely soaked in honey from the nest. Meanwhile, the announcer is commenting on the race by images sent back from hidden cameras along the route. Apparently, Red is third in position and merely behind the swimmer and bugcatcher he encountered earlier. The announcer says the boy should catch up with the two in no time with his current speed and mentions that the winner will be awarded 1 million yen aside from the HM. Back on the course, Red has caught up with the swimmer and bugcatcher on the wooden planks of Route 12, which is a popular spot for fishing. The two have gotten off their bikes and are staring helplessly at a big and dark sleeping creature that blocks their way. Red walks up to them and recognizes it as Snorlax. He decides to capture the snoring beast and releases Poli to tackle it, but Poli bounces off Snorlax's fat belly immediately upon contact. Red has the blue frog attempy several more tackles but they don't seem to hurt the sleeping pokemon a single bit. The boy checks on his Pokedex and realizes that Snorlax constantly recovers its HP during sleep and it would be impossible to sufficiently weaken it for a capture. The swimmer remarks that the only way to wake Snorlax would be to present it with food and Red instantly comes up with a plan. He holds up his honey-soaked Saur and yells at the Snorlax, which causes the swimmer and bugcatcher to freak, but the sleeping creature slowly opens its eyes to the sweet smell. Saur has a worried look on its face but Red assures it that it would be alright. Snorlax comes to awake fully and starts salivating at the sight of the honey-soaked Bulbasaur. At the finish line, the announcer and the crowd hear a faint stir in the distance and realize that the contestants are nearing goal. Yet the stir slowly becomes a rumble and everyone gawks in silence as they see Red appear from the horizon with a honey-soaked Bulbasaur crouching on his lap and a giant Snorlax chasing from behind. The boy merely crosses the front line when the big creature crashes into the poles and tents, causing the crowd to scream and flee. A few moments later, Red is sitting on the ground exhausted as Pika, Poli and Saur dance merrily around the HM. Snorlax plops down next to the boy and the numerous baskets of food and starts gobbling down his rewards. Red sighs how he ended up spending all 1 million yen on food alone for his newly captured pokemon...

 The sky is dark and raining hard in the north-eastern town known as Lavendar. Red is wandering around to seek coverage with his Pika, Poli and Saur but everybody in the little town brushes them off with cold looks and unfriendly gestures. The boy gets frustrated and wonders what caused the hostility of the residents. Just then, a kind-looking old man comes up to him and explains that the people who live there have been suspicious of one another lately and that he shouldn't take it personally. The old man crouches down in front of a white cross that sticks out from the ground and Red wonders what it is. The old man tells him that it is the graveyard of his beloved Doduo which passed away due to old age not long ago, and the boy slowly kneels down to pay his regards. The old man remarks that Red really loves pokemons and offers to let the boy stay the night at his place.

A while later, Red cleans his face with a warm towel and learns that the old man is called Mr. Fuji. The old man explains that Lavendar is a town where the souls of dead pokemons gather and that the tall building not far from his house, called the Pokemon Tower, is actually a cemetary for pokemons. Red asks why Mr. Fuji didn't build his Doduo's graveyard in the building and the old man says that people have stopped going near the building recently as ghosts have been encountered by those who do. Red laughs at this but Mr. Fuji assures him that it is more than a rumour and that's the reason why people start becoming cold and suspicious towards one another.

The old man takes out some photos of his diseased Doduo and says he wishes he could build a proper graveyard for it in the tower one day. Red takes a look at the pictures and is surprised to see Green in one of them. Mr. Fuji explains that the other boy paid a visit to him right before his Doduo passed away. He recalls seeing the boy enter the Pokemon Tower two weeks ago, but says he hasn't heard from him since then. He adds that all those who were seen entering the building have not returned either in recent months. Red tells the old man about his rivalry with Green and decides to check out the building himself.

Red slowly makes his way through the rain to the haunted building as he ponders on the possibility of the existence of ghosts. When he reaches the entrance, the door squeaks open and this immediately sends chills down the boy's spine. Red timidly navigates between the graveyards and feels the creepy atmosphere biting at him from every direction. A purple fog starts to surround the place and Red notices a Psyduck slowly taking form in front of him. The creature silently walks up to the boy with a blank look on its face, and suddenly snaps its mouth wide open with a deadly screech as its flesh falls away, revealing its skull and skeleton. Red freaks and falls back in horror while more pokemons like Lickitung, Slowbro and Tangela start to take form around him. They all have hollow eyes and fuzzy exteriors that threaten to fall off any second. The boy releases his Bulbasaur, Saur, and has it strike them down with razor leaf. But the zombies seem unaffected by the attack and keep pushing on. Saur tries a sleep powder but even that fails to work. The skeleton Psyduck suddenly charges towards Red and Saur halts it by its vines, which manages to reduce it into dust. Red rushes up to check on the pile of broken bones on the floor and realizes something must be controlling these dead bodies of the pokemons. But he doesn't have time to think. More dead bodies charge at him and the boy tries his best to dodge the attacks.

After a while, Red notices that the zombie pokemons could not move outside the purple fog and decides that something in the fog must be possessing the cadavers. Just then, a ball of fire shoots out from the fog and narrowly misses Red. The outline of a young boy slowly takes form and Red yells out joy as he recognizes him as Green. But to his surprise, the other boy fires another attack towards him and knocks him down. Red stares back in disbelief as he sees the evil looks and grins on Green and his Charmeleon...

 At the Pokemon Tower in Lavendar Town, Red stares in disbelief as his rival, Green, orders another deadly attack from his Charmeleon towards him. The fire lizard spins itself high up in the air and prepares to strike with its tail, but Red's Bulbasaur, Saur, holds it down with its vines just in time. Red sees the purple fog surrounding Green and decides that his rival must have been possessed as well. A Gastly slowly takes form above Green with a giggle and Red realizes the cadavers that attacked him earlier have all been under the psychic control of the gaseous pokemon. He has Saur unleash another vine whip but the attack goes right through the Gastly without hurting it. Green raises his arm and orders a fire spin from Charmeleon as Red thinks hard to come up with a strategy. But to his surprise as well as that of the Gastly, the fire generated begins to sway the gaseous exterior of the ghost pokemon and breaks the control it has over Green. The boy falls to the ground with his Charmeleon and Red immediately tells Saur to take care of the purple fog. Saur absorbs all the Gastly into the seed on its back and sends them away from the tower by releasing a beam from its mouth like he would with a solar beam. The pokemon zombies lay immobile on the floor as Green slowly wakes up.

Red walks up to his rival to check on him but the arrogant boy says he doesn't need Red's help. Green stands up and begins to walk further into the tower as he tells Red to leave him on his own to deal with the unfinished business there. Red sees the obvious anger in Green and rushes after him to push on the matter, but the other boy wouldn't say anything. Red decides to follow anyway and they begin climbing the stairs. A while later, Red begins to tire and wonders how many floors the tower has when a puddle of purple liquid starts to ooze out from the ground in front of him. The puddle suddenly bursts into a flood and Green immediately has his Charmeleon grab Red and lift him out of the way. Red looks in horror as his left sleeve is charred and Green explains that it is the deadly toxic attack of poison pokemons.

Green yells out for the enemy to appear as a man with a ninja scarf slowly takes form in front of the two. Red recognizes him as the same person who controlled the Rhydon at Mt. Moon and the man introduces himself as Koga, one of the three executives of Team Rocket. Green glares at him with fury as the man tells the two boys how they have messed with TR's plans to turn the Pokemon Tower into a secret base of the gang. Apparently, the ghost encounters in Lavendar have all been schemed by TR to drive people away from the building. Green orders a flamethrower from his Charmeleon towards Koga, only to discover that it is a projected image that they are seeing. Koga laughs and says no one has ever survived a battle against him as an Arbok crawls into the room with gleaming fangs. The giant cobra releases another acid attack and the two boys instantly spring to their feet and head for the stairs.

Green decides that Koga must be watching and controlling the Arbok from a distance through some visual devices and thinks on a plan. He lures the giant cobra to the floor where the zombies attacked Red earlier and turns around to face it. The poison pokemon hisses and charges towards the boy as he orders his Charmeleon to fend it off with a reflect shield. Outside the tower, Koga is being lifted in the air by his Golbat. He orders another acid attack from his Arbok to break the reflect shield by speaking through a little screen in the shape of a Golbat that he holds. He watches the shield shatter into pieces and grins evilly as he sees the corrosive acid pour all over the Charmeleon. Suddenly a flame flashes across his screen and the man is shocked to see his Arbok spliced into half by the Charmeleon's tail while the fire lizard remains unharmed. It turns out that Green has deliberated lured the Arbok to their current floor for his Charmeleon to make use of a zombie Psyduck as coverage when the acid poured down . And when the shattering glasses momentarily impeded Koga's vision on the screen, Green made use of the chance to unleash a surprise attack to finish off the big cobra. Outside the tower, Koga crushes his screen in his hands in anger and swears revenge.

The rain has stopped in Lavendar Town and Mr. Fuji is thanking Red and Green for their help in clearing up the ghosts in the Pokemon Tower. The old man shows Red the new graveyard he made for his Doduo inside the building and the boy wishes him the best. Green turns around to walk away without a word as Red watches him from behind and lets out a soft sigh. He then motions Pika, Poli and Saur to come along as they happily continue on their long journey...

 Up in the observation post outside Celadon, a girl with long brown hair hums a soft tune as she looks out into the countryside beyond the city gates with a pair of binoculars. She doesn't have to wait for long before the boy she's waiting for comes into view. A little smirk appears on her face as she jumps to action.

Red has made his way to the gates of Celadon when a wild Mankey approaches to attack him. He immediately releases his Bulbasaur, Saur, which takes care of the pig monkey pokemon in no time. Suddenly, Saur starts to shudder and pant, and Red frantically reaches for his Pokedex to check on its status. The seed on the Saur's back begins to burst and the little pokemon slowly evolves into its second stage, Ivysaur.

Red happily congratulates his pokemon when a cry of joy comes from behind. The boy turns to see the girl in the observation post earlier fervently grinning and applauding to Saur's evolution. She compliments that Red must be a very strong trainer and Red immediately blushes, but then the girl adds that no pokemon can develop its strength to the fullest without good items to assist during battles. She flips out a bunch of items including X-attacks and PP-ups and starts selling them to Red. Red is about to refuse when the girl shoots him a hurt and innocent look, which immediately gets the boy to buy all she has to offer for a rip-off price of 6000 yen.

A while later, Red continues on his way to Celadon with a whole bunch of pokemon items in his arms. Saur, Pika and Poli tag along with indifferent looks on their faces. Red recalls how cute the girl was and wonders why someone as young as she is would be selling things on the street already. Suddenly, a wild Pinsir pops out from the bushes and Red immediately grabs the chance to try out the new items. He uses a PP-up on Pika but it seems to have no effect at all when the stagbeetle pokemon crashes into the little rat. Red frantically straps all the weapons and armour on Pika but the electric rat feels less than secure dressed up like an ancient warrior doll. Another tackle from the Pinsir sends Pika flying high up in the skies and all the accessories crash to the ground into broken pieces. It is only then that Red realizes the items he bought are completely fake.

Later, at the PokemonCentre of Celadon City, an upset Red hands over his battered Pika to the nurse at the healing corner. He then calls Prof. Oak via the virtual phone system to report his progress. A minute later, the professor's face appears on the screen and he instantly congratulates Red for his hard work when he sees the boy's evolved Ivysaur. The old man remarks that he is also aware that Green's Charmander has evolved and that the remaining starter yet to evolve is Squirtle. Red gets confused and Oak explains that Squirtle is the water starter he usually prepares for new trainers and that Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle form a balanced triangle of type advantages and disadvantages. Red gets intrigued and asks about the other trainer who set out with Squirtle, but to his shock, the professor sheepishly tells him that Squirtle has in fact been stolen a while ago.

It is midday at Celadon and a grudgy Red walks down the busy streets as he ponders on the many evil acts around the world. Just then, he notices a small stall selling pokemon items around the corner and recognizes the seller as the girl who tricked him earlier. He immediately snaps at her and starts chasing after her, who flees instantly upon seeing Red. The two continue their chase along a river canal in the city and the girl hurriedly fiddles into her pocket for a pokeball. She tosses it into the water to release a Wartortle, then hops onto the turtle pokemon and speeds away as she turns to grin and wave at an aggrevated Red. Red fishes out a pokeball from his belt and heizes it high above the waters. His newly captured Snorlax, Lax, pops out from the ball and plops down onto the river bed, splashing the water away from the canal and sending the girl and her Wartortle back onshore.

Red walks up to confront the girl as she forces an apologetic smile on her face and thinks hard on a quick plan. She suddenly throws herself around the boy and tells him that she is glad to have caught up with him again. She says that she has been looking around for him to refund his money because she realizes that she has sold him some defected items and feels bad about it. She fakes some tears with her saliva and Red begins to buy into her lie. Suddenly, she pushes the boy off and orders a bubble from her Wartortle, but to her surprise, Red is already prepared and his Lax picks him up onto its shoulders to evade the attack. The boy remarks that a trainer who has earned two badges knows what to expect in pokemon battles. He orders a mega punch from Lax, which smashes the ground and faints the girl as the floor beneath her gives way.

A while later, Red has placed the unconscious girl under a tree with the help of Lax. He searches her purse for the money she tricked him and notices the girl's name, Blue, stitched on it. He then pulls out his Pokedex to check on the data of her Wartortle. He learns that Wartortle is the evolved form of Squirtle and suddenly wonders if the girl has anything to do with the burglary at Oak's Lab. He then decides to let the matter drop and turns to walk off with Lax. What he he doesn't know is that Blue has awaken and is secretly smirking with her eyes closed.

Late at night, at the Celadon Hotel, Red frantically thrashes around his belongings to look for his missing gym badges while Pika, Poli and Saur watch their trainer go beserk. Meanwhile, back at the observation post, Blue sits besides her Wartortle and admires the glistening Boulder and Cascade badges she stole from Red when he carried her. She wonders how much money she would get from selling these badges...

 At the Celadon Game Corner, a gang leader of Team Rocket gets annoyed as the search team he dispatched earlier returns and reports their failure to locate the young lady, Blue. Disguised in Team Rocket uniforms, Red silently waits among the other TR members for the gang's next move and recalls what happened earlier...

... After losing his Boulder and Cascade badges, Red has come to conclude that the thief girl he met earlier, Blue, must be the culprit. He flips out a map and tries to figure out her possible current location when he notices two TR members walking by. He overhears the men from behind a tree and learns that they are looking for Blue as well, and wonders what does the girl have to do with such an evil organization. As the two men take separate ways to continue their search, Red trails behind one of them and finds the chance to knock him unconscious, then steals his clothes to disguise himself...

Red patiently waits and listens as the TR gang leader divides the team into three groups and gives order to teams A and B to continue scouting for Blue while team C, which Red is in, to render help in the secret laboratory beneath the Game Corner. The gang leader pushes a secret swtich behind a poster and a hidden pathway opens up behind the wall. Red follows closely as the rest of the team make their way down the dark stairs. Upon arrival at the secret laboratory, Red immediatley sees a purple and white Pok���©mon chained inside a giant liquid cylinder. Cells and body fragments surround the obviously artificially synthesized Pok���©mon and the boy notices that the right arm and leg of the Pok���©mon are still incomplete. A bald old scientist with white moustache and dark glasses walks up to the gang leader and tells him that although the basic body structure of the Pok���©mon in the cylinder, Mewtwo, has been created, the existing DNA samples of Mew they possess are insufficient to complete the process. The gang leader slams his hand angrily on the table as he curses Blue and says once they retrieve the data disk she stole from them, they would be able to locate Mew. Red secretly overhears all of this and wonders what is the deal with the team's obsession with Mew. Just then, reports come back through the monitors that team A has located Blue. The gang leader orders all teams to head towards the area immediately.

A while later, out in the east of Celadon, Blue and her Wartortle, Turtley, are surrounded by more than twenty TR members, Red included. The gang leader demands the Mew data disk back, but the girl tosses the disk to Turtley, which holds it with its mouth, and remarks that any brutal attack on her Pok���©mon would destroy the treasure they seek. The team releases their Pok���©mon and a Machamp and Hitmonlee cautiously charge towards Turtley. The agile little turtle dodges all the punches and kicks and the two fighting Pok���©mon end up hurting themselves. Blue giggles and shows TR her Boulder and Cascade badges, which she have made into earrings, and brags that a trainer who has earned two badges knows what to expect in Pok���©mon battles. Red gets infuriated as the girl not only stole his badges but also his words. The gang leader grunts and releases a Tauros, and remarks that the bull is once a leader of wild Pok���©mon in Safari Zone.

The Tauros starts whipping its three tails rhythmatically and the fallen Hitmonlee and Machamp slowly get up to join the Graveller and Geodude also belonging to TR. Blue is confused at their actions and the gang leader explains with a smirk that Tauros whips itself with its multiple tails to give off a commanding beat that generates synchronized attacks from its followers. The Machamp and Hitmonlee suddenly loom ahead of Blue and pull off a double strike from both sides on Turtley. The data disk of Mew gets knocked out of the its mouth and the gang leader triumphantly catches it, then orders the Tauros to finish off Blue.

The bull Pok���©mon corners the girl to a cliff when she withdraws Turtley and tosses out another Pok���©ball to release her Ditto, Ditty. The TR members are surprised to see the weird pink gob while Red worries that the girl has run out of defensive means. He immediately lunges towards Blue and pushes her out of the way as the Tauros narrowly misses them and charges off the cliff instead, taking Ditty with it. Blue instantly recognizes Red and says it is very sweet of him to come to her rescue, but Red impatiently points out that her Ditto has gone down with the enemy's Pok���©mon.

Suddenly, the Tauros climbs back up the cliff and starts puffing with fury, and the gang leader remarks that Tauros are tough fighters that are not easily taken down. He orders another attack from the bull Pok���©mon but it starts whipping its tails instead. The gang leader looks on confused as the other TR Pok���©mon begin turning against their own team members. A Graveller and Geodude tackle down the gang leader and the man yells at Red to help them out. Blue gives and grin and reveals Red identity by yanking off his disguise costume, just as the Hitmonlee knocks the man unconscious with another kick. Red is still confused at all this while Blue releases her Jigglypuff, which draws in air to inflate itself like a giant ballon. Blue grabs Red and holds on to Jigglypuff's foot as they fly off the cliff. Red takes a look at the knocked out Rocket members and is shocked to see the Tauros slowly turning back into a pink gob and finally back to Ditty. Blue withdraws it and explains that Dittos learn a special skill known as transform which allows them to take up any form. Red realizes that TR's Tauros has indeed fallen off the cliff and the one that climbed up afterwards was in fact Ditty.

Back on the cliff, the TR gang leader swears revenge as he watches the two youngsters fly off with the Jigglypuff, but he takes comfort in the fact that they have retrieved the data disk crucial to capturing Mew...

 Outside the Celedon Game Corner, Blue is crouching in the bushes with Red as she points out to the boy that the secret hideout of Team Rocket lies underneath the game centre. Red already knows this and still cannot understand why they have chosen to come back to their enemies after all the hassle to escape earlier, but Blue tells him to keep quiet. Red recalls the loss of the data disk and remarks that the Rockets won't be looking for them anymore. But then Blue lets out a grin and flips out another data disk. Red is shocked and the girl reveals that the one that TR snagged from her was fake. She adds that with the help of the data from the disk, she'll be able to locate Mew. Red asks about this mysterious PokÃ��Ã�©mon TR is after and Blue has her Ditto, Ditty, transform into Mew, which Red immediately recognizes as the lean and white PokÃ��Ã�©mon he encountered in the Pallet woods a while ago. Blue orders the transformed Ditty to go off into the fields and explains to Red that she would distract the Rockets by a fake Mew while she goes looking for the real one in the area.

In the secret laboratory beneath the Game Corner, the TR gang leader crushes the data disk angrily as he learns that it is fake. He hisses that the key to capture Mew is on the disk and without it, they would be hopeless in locating the elusive Pok���©mon. Just then, one of their hidden cameras out in the fields send back an image capture of Mew and the gang leader immediately orders his team to dispatch towards the area, despite his doubt of the creature's sudden appearance.

Red and Blue watch silently in the bushes as the TR members rush out of their secret hideout to go after the fake Mew in the fields. Red wonders if Ditty is able to put up a fight and Blue says that the transformed Pok���©mon would be able to fool the Rockets for a while, although it lacks the mighty strength the real Mew possesses. The girl then takes out a modified pair of binoculars, which she named the Mew-locating Scope, and explains that every psychic Pok���©mon generates a unique wave pattern when using psychic abilities. She tells Red that with the information on the Mew data disk, she has constucted this scope specialized in detecting the wave emitted by Mew. Blue puts on the scope and the two begin searching around the Celadon countryside for the elusive psychic pokmon.

After a while, still unable to locate Mew even after detecting signals from the south-eastern side, Red tells Blue about the ferocious-looking Pok���©mon he saw in TR's secret laboratory. He says that the Rocket's purpose for finding Mew is about generic engineering and asks Blue's reason for going after the Pok���©mon. The girl says it's solely for money and Red is shocked about this. Blue goes on to explain that contrary to common belief that only 150 Pok���©mon exist, Mew is the mythical and elusive 151th Pok���©mon that many breeders in the world seek after. She remarks that she would earn a fortune if she can capture the Pok���©mon. Red gets annoyed and sighs about the fact that Blue treats Pok���©mon as high-priced pets.

Just then, signals on Blue's scope screen goes rampant and a bright white flash shoots across the sky. The two instantly find themselves trapped inside a swirling hurricane and Red wonders what has caused the sudden gale. Blue takes another look into her scope and points out that the turbulent air currents are caused by psychokinetic powers. Suddenly, the actual Mew comes into view and Red is stunned at the sight. Blue snaps him out of his haze and tells him to help her with the capture. The two immediately release Saur and Turtley and notice the agility of the psychic Pok���©mon. Red remarks that Saur's vines won't be able to stop it with its current speed and Blue orders Turtley to slow it down with a hydropump. Water starts sprouting out from random spots on the ground and Mew is forced to move between the massive water columns. Red correctly anticipates the psychic Pok���©mon's track and successfully traps it with Saur's vines as Blue cheers happily.

But the girl's thrill is cut short when a huge boulder crashes to the ground behind them, narrowly missing the two. They turn around to find TR members led by the gang leader and his Jynx glaring angrily at them, and watches as they toss a battered Ditty onto the ground. Blue realizes the Rockets have busted her trick and withdraws Ditty as the Jynx fires a psybeam towards them. Saur begins to lose its grip on Mew from the psychic vibrations, but then Red runs in front of his companions and take in all the damage while telling Blue to grab Mew and flee. The boy yells that he would not allow TR to make use of Mew to create evil Pok���©mon and orders Blue to hurry. The gang leader gets annoyed and tells Jynx to release a psywave. The attack shatters through the area and leaves Red and Blue holding their ears in pain. Saur's grip on Mew snaps and the psychic Pok���©mon goes tumbling into the sky. The gang leader immediately orders Jynx to grab Mew but Red releases his Poli to block off the humanshape Pok���©mon with a punch. The Jynx counteracts with its ice powers and freezes Poli while Mew wiggles free of the vines still around it.

Mew shoots an angry glare at the gang leader and starts to glow with a bright white light. It releases a blinding flash and instantly turns the man and his Jynx immobile. The psychic Pok���©mon takes a final look at Red and Blue before soaring off into the skies in a hurricane. Blue softly mutters the Pok���©mon's name and falls to her knees with a gentle sigh. Red tries to cheer her up but discovers that the girl is secretly giggling to herself. She holds up her polaroid with a grin and happily exclaims that she will earn a lot of money with this exclusive photo shoot she took of Mew here in Celadon. Red gets furious that the girl still found time to take snapshots when he was desperately battling for life earlier, but Blue has already taken off with her Jigglypuff and says she will sell the photo big.

Still upset, Red fiddles in his pocket and finds a little piece of paper. He unwraps it and finds his two lost badges plus a little note from Blue thanking him for helping her out. He gazes into the sky with a sigh as the girl waves goodbye and disappears into the horizon...

 At the Game Corner item exchange stand, people stare in awe as Green hands over his three full buckets of coins and receives a pokeball from the man behind the counter. The man wants to know if Green has any experience with traded pokemons and the boy wonders why he asked that. The man explains that training a pokemon which you didn't capture is a lot trickier than dealing with one that you did. Green thinks on the man's words for a while, then walks off with the new pokeball in his hand.

Out in the countryside of Celadon, Red is on his way to leave this city which caused him enough trouble when he hears a familiar yell from behind. He turns around and is just in time to spot a Porygon dashing by before another boy crashes into him. The impact causes the two boys' pokeballs to scatter on the ground and Red looks up to find Green to be the one he bumped into. Green gets up and scowls at his Porygon before withdrawing it. Red gets excited to see the rare virtual pokemon and wonders where Green captured it. The other boy impatiently explains that he exchanged it in the Game Corner and hurries off on his way after gathering up his pokeballs from the ground.

Red sighs how he and Green never get along as he picks up his own scattered pokeballs. Just then, a cry of help comes from behind and Red turns to see two young ladies being attacked by a wild Rhydon, Marowak and Graveller. The boy immediately rushes to their rescue and tosses out a pokeball, but to his surprise, a Charmeleon pops out instead of his own pokemon. He frantically scrambles for his other pokeballs, only to discover that his Pika, Poli and Saur are gone and replaced by a Pidgeot, Golduck, Scyther and Machoke. The two young ladies gets starry-eyed immediately upon seeing the pokemon lineup and mistakes Red for Green, whom has apparently established fame in quite a lot of places. Red decides to go with the flow and orders a flamethrower from Charmeleon, but the fire lizard ignores the boy as the wild Rhydon squishes him under his feet and walks away with the other attackers.

Later, a disheartened Red is trying to find Green in the woods nearby after realizing the two of them have mistakenly picked up the wrong pokeballs after crashing into each other. The boy sighs as he recalls the looks of disgust the two ladies shot him earlier after calling him a fake. He takes a look at his Pokedex while Green's pokemons squint at him with hostility. The five pokemons start to go on a rampage and storm back and forth in the area. Red knows that he would not be able to command them due to their lack of trust and loyalty in him. He then decides to call off training and battling for a while and pulls off his clothes. He calls out to Green's pokemons as he dives into the stream and suggests the pokemons to relax and have some fun before finding their trainer. Green's Charmeleon and Pidgeot look at the boy and then at each other, baffled.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the woods, Red's pokemons are also on a rampage as Green checks on their data in his Pokedex. He realizes by mistakenly switching pokeballs with Red, he has technically traded his own pokemons away as they do not appear on his active part list anymore. He recalls what the man at the Game Corner exchange stand said about training another trainer's pokemons being trickier, and decides to test his skills in taming Red's pokemons.

Three days later, Red is cooking his dinner besides a fire while Green's pokemons continue to ignore him. Red flips out his newly captured Diglett, Dig, and Krabby, Kra, and wonders how Pika, Poli and Saur are. Just then, the boy spots a fire flaring up in the dark up on the little hill not far from him. He notices some white furly tails swaying back and forth and instantly recognizes them as a Ninetales's. Up on the hill, Green is facing off a wild Ninetales with Red's Pika. He orders the electric rat to use the new toxic attack he taught it and remarks that pokemons should learn a wide variety of attacks apart from those of their own types. Pika lets out another thunderbolt at the Ninetales and the fox pokemon turns to flee. Green immediately gives chase as the Ninetales runs into Red, who is on his way to the scene.

The Ninetales spurts a flamethrower at Red and the boy instinctively releases Green's Machoke to fend off the flames. Green catches up with them and scowls at Red for putting his Machoke's life at risk. Red runs up to his panting Pika and also accuses Green of overworking his pokemons. Green's Machoke continues to wrestle with the Ninetales when it suddenly starts to shudder and glow. The two boys stare in shock as the fighting pokemon evolves into its final stage, Machamp, and pins the wild fox onto the ground. Red and Green both toss out an empty pokeball and one of them traps the Ninetales in. The two boys start fighting over the newly caught pokemon but Green ends up winning. The two trade their own pokemons back from one another and Green wonders why his pokemons have all adopted jolly attitudes.

Red decides to head towards the Cycling Road next and calls for his Pika, Poli and Saur to continue on their journey, but then he notices something wrong about them. His three pokemons now have cold and ferocious looks like Green's pokemons instead of their usual jolly ones. Red gets disheartened again and curses Green for what he did to his pokemons as a stern-looking Pika, Poli and Saur trot after their trainer...

 Out on Cycling Road, Red pulls his bike to an urgent halt in an ear-piercing screech when a Tangela suddenly hops by in front of him. The boy loses balance and falls off his bike as he spots a long line of people carrying a fancy little sedan walking by. He notices the grass pokemon entering the sedan and starts chasing after it, only to get stopped immediately by the people in the line. They angrily tell him that the Tangela belongs to Lady Erika and that he should respect it, but the boy gets mad and yells that he doesn't care about whatever lady owns the pokemon. Erika hears the noise and comes out of the sedan to ask about the hassle, and the people immediately drop to their knees and bow to her. One man pushes Red down and says he has to show respect to the only heir of the Celadon Gym. Red gets excitedly upon hearing that Erika is the gymleader and jumps in front to request a challenge. Erika notices the Boulder and Cascade badges on Red's T-shirt while the people try to grab Red and tell him that their lady needs to rest after the long journey out of the city. The gymleader calmly accepts the boy's challenge but says he has to complete one of her quests to prove his strength before beginning the match. Red instantly agrees as Erika tells him to capture one wild pokemon she's looking for, Eevee.

Later, at the PokemonCentre on Route 17, Red gets upset as he still fails to find any information about Eevee from the computer. Apparently, he has not come across this specie before and has no idea what the pokemon looks like. Suddenly, Bill's face appears on the screen and the young man says he could help him with his search. A few moments later, Red and Bill are out on the grassland next to the PokemonCentre and the boy thanks Bill for coming to his assistance. Bill explains that flying pokemons make travelling much easier these days as he tries to search with a different keyword on his laptop. An image of Eevee pops up and he says he will send the picture to his acquaintance all over the region to help locate the pokemon, though after a while, none of the responses have been positive.

Back at the Celadon Gym, Erika is practicing her archery wearing her kimono robe. One of her maidens comes up and asks her if it is safe to depend on a young boy to retrieve Eevee as it is an important part of their plan. Erika is about to repond when she notices a stir and immediately releases her Vileplume to launch a petal dance attack. The swirling petals sweep across the maiden and instantly knock out a lurking Drowzee behind her. The maiden gaps in shock as the gymleader secretly wishes Red to find Eevee as soon as possible.

Near the city gates of Celadon, Red and Bill have narrowed their search to a park after receiving reports from an acquaintance that Eevee has been spotted around that area. Bill says that his source states that Eevee has been seen using fire attacks and assumes it to be a fire type pokemon. The man then pulls out an antenna-like device with a screen and remarks that he would confirm things with this new invention specialized for detecting pokemon types. Suddenly, Eevee hops out from the bushes behind the two and Bill quickly checks his screen for a signal. But to his surprise, nothing shows and Red impatiently releases his Krabby, Kra, to take down the little creature. The Eevee instantly transforms into a Jolteon and faints Kra with a thundershock when an electric symbol appears on Bill's decice screen.

Knowing that the pokemon they're dealing with is electric, Red withdraws Kra and releases his Diglett, Dig, instead. In a flash, the Jolteon transforms into Vaporeon and once again knocks out Red's pokemon as Bill's device screen shows a water symbol. Red gets confused and releases Saur to battle, but the Vaporeon has now changed into a Flareon and starts spurting flames out of its mouth. Red and Bill starts running as a fire symbol appears on the screen. The man suddenly recalls a report about an Eevee possessing all three fire, water and electric abilities which he initially believed to be erroneous, but decides that it must be the Eevee they're currently facing.

The Flareon shifts back into an Eevee and Red notices that its left ear wiggles every time it transforms. He realizes that it must be using its ears to detect its foe's type and orders Saur to release a razor leaf. The leaf blades wrap around Eevee's two ears and the little pokemon instantly loses the ability to transform. Red grabs the chance and has Saur use solarbeam to knock it out. Bill runs up to the fainted Eevee and finds a small piece of metal chip on its left ear, apparently used for detection. Red realizes someone must have performed some biological alterations to the little pokemon and starts to wonder why Erika wanted it so desperately at the first place. He gathers Eevee in his arms as he and Bill hurry towards the Celadon Gym to confront the gymleader...

 A furious Red storms into the Celadon Gym with Bill as he yells out for the gymleader, Erika, to show. He hurries towards the healing machine on the far side of the room and immediately retreives the injured Eevee into a pokeball before placing it in the machine. Bill spots a file with the title 'Eevee Bio-engineering Scheme' on the table, and flips through the document to discover that someone is trying to make use of Eevee's multi-evolutionary ability to create one that could freely transform between its three elemental states. He reads out loud to Red about the plan and out of nowhere, Erika appears to finish off his sentence. Red and Bill instantly spin around to find the gymleader applauding their great work in capturing the Eevee. Standing in front of a gang of people, she holds the Rainbow Badge in her hands and says Red has passed his test to prove himself worthy. But the boy fires back and accuses the lady for tricking him to participate in her evil plans and that he will not let her get away with conducting inhumane experiments on pokemons. Before he could finish, Erika hops onto the stage in the gym and releases her Tangela, Bellsprout and Vileplume. Red wastes no time and calls out for Pika, Poli and Saur.

Erika announces that it will be a 3 on 3 match and immediately orders a vine whip from her Tangela. Red's Saur retaliates with its own vines but immediately gets hurled away and knocked out by the other grass pokemon's attack. Poli steps up to prepare for battle while Erika withdraws Tangela and orders Bellsprout forward. The big blue frog charges towards its opponent and strikes it with a double-slap. Bellsprout's cheeks swell in red but before Poli can finish it off with a final blow, it blocks the attack and retaliates with a double-slap of its own. Poli faints and Erika smirks that mimic comes in handy when the opposing pokemon knows strong attacks. With two pokemons down, Red tells Pika to try its best and Erika has her Vileplume attack with a petal dance. The electric little rat has no problem at first dodging the sweeping petals but Vileplume launches a swords dance and throws the petals into a swirl which hits Pika immediately. Red looks on worried as he watches Pika's HP fall to near zero on his Pokedex.

Erika shoots a cold look at Red and says she expects more from him. She remarks that it will be difficult for her to think of another quest for him to complete for his next challenge now that she has Eevee re-captured. This brings the boy to remember Eevee and he immediately looks over towards the healing machine, but to his shock, the machine doesn't seem to be healing the pokemon. Erika explains that the healing process would not start until the switch handle is activated. She coldly states that with Eevee's current state, it would die in no time if she releases it from the pokeball holding it. Red begs her not to and the gymleader asks the boy if he thinks that failed or useless experimental specimens should be destroyed. Without hesitation the boy yells that all living things deserve to be treated equally and it's the last thing he wants to see pokemons harmed. Just then, the petal-covered Pika starts to glow and a transparent counterpart of itself floats out of its own body. Red and Bill wonders what is going on when the transparent Pika charges towards Vileplume. Erika remarks that it is the substitue attack, which makes use of one fourth of the pokemon's HP, but says it's a futile act as the transparent Pika gets destroyed by Vileplume instantly upon contact.

Red grins and says Erika has underestimated his pokemon. The gymleader spins around and finds the actual Pika standing in front of the healing machine, guarding Eevee. The cold and evil expressions on her face suddenly fade away and she lets out a little sigh as she walks over to Pika and gently pats its head. She compliments the little rat for using its remaining HP to distract the enemy in hopes of protecting others. Red and Bill look on confused as Erika activates the healing machine. The gymleader holds Pika in her arms and apologizes for her hostility. She says that she has learnt about Red from Brock and Misty and explains that she was testing him to see if he really cares about pokemons. She reveals that the Eevee escaped from an evil orgnization's biological experiments earlier and she and her companions at Celadon are trying everything they could to salvage it after collecting information from various sources. She points out that the file on the table is the compilation of what they know so far.

Red asks about the identity of the evil organization and as he expected, it is Team Rocket. Erika kneels down and puts on the Rainbow Badge on the boy's T-shirt as she remarks that they will need trainers with caring hearts and strong fighting wills like him to combat the evil technology of their enemies. Red promises that he will do what he can and the gymleader intoduces him to her gang of companions, whom are all citizens of Celadon brought together to fight TR's evil schemes.

A few days later, Red prepares to set off and Bill asks if it is safe for him to take the Eevee along. He reminds him of what Erika has talked about the frequent attacks of psychic pokemons from another city's gym and remarks that it might be related to Team Rocket. Red gives him an assuring smile and trots off with Eevee without a word as Bill watches, annoyed. Somewhere nearby, Sabrina floats in mid-air on her Kadabra and watches Red continue on his journey. She shoots him a cold look and disappears in a flash of light...

 Red has arrived at the infamous Safari Zone of Fuchsia City which is known to be the home of many exotic pokemons. After leaving his own pokemons behind with the guards at the entrance, he happily trots down the stairs leading into the park and embarks onto a wooden sampan with two mecha-pidgeys on it. The introductary announcement being broadcasted at the entrance explains that the two mecha pokemons would be the tour guides of the visitors, and that there are hidden cameras all over the park to monitor their progress. Red takes a look at the two odd machines perching on the side of the sampan and proceeds to take off.

As the boy ventures along the river, he gets excited as rare pokemons like Parasect and Exeggcute come into view. A wild Dragonair jumps out of the water and the boy gasps in bewilderment as the pokemon's glistening body glimmers in the sunlight. Suddenly, the sampan comes to a halt and Red wonders what is going on. One of the mecha-pidgeys remarks that they are programmed to stop everytime a rare pokemon moment is detected. The boy turns around and sees two Nidokings fighting, and the mecha-pidgey explains that the two drill giants are fighting over a Nidoqueen. One of the Nidokings delivers a massive blow to the other and Red exclaims in surprise.

Up in the monitor room of the Safari Zone, the warden asks his technicians about the park's security system and a man reassures him that the mecha-pidgeys have been programmed to detect dangers and ensure their visitors' safety. Back in the park, Red is amazed at the power of the Nidoking and decides to capture it. He grins to himself and pulls out an empty pokeball he has hidden away from the guards. He makes sure the two mecha-pidgeys are not watching and hurls the ball towards the two fighting Nidokings. Unfortunately, the ball misses the two and captures the Nidoqueen next to them instead. The two mecha-pidgeys screech in panic as the two Nidokings start storming towards them in a fury. Red tries to get his sampan moving but one Nidoking thrashes its fist into the little boat, crushing the whole thing, and sends the boy drowning and sinking into the waters.

A few moments later, Red wakes up to find himself stranded in another region of the Safari Zone. Only one mecha-pidgey remains with him and the little machine angrily accuses the boy of breaking the park rules. It remarks that with the sampan destroyed, they will have to navigate on foot to get to the exit. Red wonders why the two Nidokings acted so hostile towards visitors and the mecha-pidgey explains that pokemons in the Safari Zone are untamed, and one of its jobs is to make sure captures are only attempted when conditions are safe. It does this by storing the capture devices and only releases them only when no danger is detected. It explains that it was pure luck that he traps the Nidoqueen with a normal pokeball because normally, the ferocious wild pokemons in the park can only be captured by the specially designed safari balls. Its stomach opens up and a pokeball with yellow and green stripes pops out. Red picks up the ball and is about to ask something else when he hears a rumble behind the bushes. The Nidoking that attacked him earlier comes into view and it has apparently followed him all the way down the river. It glares its fangs and prepares another assault with its fist. Red tosses the safari ball towards the thrashing beast but it swipes it off with ease. The mecha-pidget complains that the boy is simly wasting safari balls and says that wild pokemons in the Safari Zone need to be weakened as well before attempting a capture.

Red and the mecha-pidgey narrowly avoid a fatal punch from the Nidoking and the boy watches in shock as the cracked ground gets burnt with acid. He realizes that his attacker produces poison in its claws and thinks hard on a strategy to get out of the situation. He picks up a rock and hurls it towards the Nidoking. It hits the beast square-faced but ends up getting it more aggravated as Red springs to his feet to flee.

Back in the monitor room, the technicians are trying to establish a connection to Red's mecha-pidgeys but no signals can be received. The warden comforts Red's Pika and Saur and tells them that their trainer will be fine. One man confirms that one of the mecha-pidgets have been damaged but the other is apparently still with the boy. Pika and Saur exchange a worried look with each other and wonder if Red is alright.

Outside, the Nidoking is still on Red's tail and it continues to thrash around and crush things with its poisonous claws. One time, the acid oozing out from the cracked ground splashes onto Red's legs and the boy drops to the floor, wincing in pain. The Nidoking is about to deliver its final blow when the mecha-pidgey gets in the way and takes the attack for the boy. The little machine crashes to the floor and Red gets furious. He picks up a rocky shard from the floor and leads his ferocious attacker into the bushes. Once the wild pokemon loses sight of him, he hurls the shard towards it and succeeds in bliding its left eye. With the Nidoking growling in pain, Red hurriedly picks up the damaged mecha-pidgey and runs into the woods.

A few hours later, night has fallen in the Safari Zone and Red is still lost inside the massive park. He thanks the mecha-pidgey for helping him and asks if it is hurt, but the little machine impatiently snaps its head away and says machines do not feel pain and it was simply doing its duty to protect its visitor. It remarks that a trainer with minimum battle skills would find his way out of the dangerous zone in no time. Red wonders what it means and the mecha-pidgey coldly states that it has never seen a trainer as lousy as he is. Red gets ticked off and is about to protest when a vine silently creeps behind him and without warning, yanks him up into the air. The mecha-pidgey screeches in horror as it recognizes the vine being a Victreebell's and urges the boy to escape before he gets digested by the pokemon's deadly juices.

The vines entangle themselves around Red and the boy thrashes helplessly as the Victreebell gaps its mouth wide and pushes its prey down with the draping leaf on its head...

 It is night time at the Safari Zone and the park warden is still searching for his missing visitor, Red, with his team of men. The boy's pokemons, Pika, Poli and Saur start to get really worried about their trainer as the search team has uncovered nothing so far. Pika gets upset and lets out a desperate cry into the evening sky, in hopes that its voice would somehow reach the boy's ears.

Somewhere deep in the woods of the park, Red is using all his strength to cling onto the rim of the Victreebell's gaping mouth and struggling hard to keep himself from falling into the acid below. The boy stares in horror as he watches a piece of leaf chars and melts as it drops into the corrosive liquid. Suddenly, the Victreebell lifts him away from its mouth and ties him upside down onto a tree branch. A swarm of Weepinbells, Bellsprouts and Victreebells start to emerge from the bushes and the boy looks around to find some other preys of the flycatcher pokemons being tied up like himself on various trees. The mecha-pidgey silently creeps up onto the tree branch Red is on and asks if the boy is alright. It explains that the grass pokemons are about to start their breeding ritual and are gathered there to evolve as a group during their sleep that night. Red realizes the Victreebells must have collected the numerous preys, including himself, to provide sufficient nutrients for the evolution process. He thrashes around frantically to wiggle free of the vines but the mecha-pidgey says Victreebells have very firm grips. It asks what other items the boy has brought with him apart from the safari balls and starts fumbling in the boy's bagpack. After pulling out a flute-like item, it places a little doll shaped like a Clefairy onto the boy's tied hands and says they have to wait for the right moment to take action.

A while later, the Weepinbells and Bellsprouts start to fall asleep as one Victreebell lifts a piece of leaf stone into the sky with its vines. It sends its other vine towards his captured preys and pierces into the body of a rat, draining its energy and life force. The mecha-pidgey tells Red the ritual has begun and motions him to prepare with the doll. It then flies high above the trees with the flute in its mouth as the boy watches the birds and rats next to him get drained off one by one. The mecha-pidgey positions itself right above the sleeping grass pokemons and in one breath blows hard into the flute. The Weepinbells and Bellsprouts immediately snap out of their slumbers and look around, confused. Red sees this and with the limited movement his hands get, tosses out the Clefairy little doll high up into the air. The Victreebell immediately loosens its vines on Red and reaches for the doll. The boy takes the chance to wiggle free as the mecha-pidgey explains to him how the whole plan worked.

Apparently the flute it used is known as the Pokeflute and has the ability to wake up sleeping pokemon, while the Clefairy doll, also known as the Pokedoll, can be used to distract wild pokemons during escapes. By using the Pokeflute, it has interrupted the ritual and left the Victreebells surprised and unprepared. Throwing in the Pokedoll at that time furthers confused them and made it easy for them to forget about their preys. Red yanks free of the remaining vines on himself and the mecha-pidgey adds that its only worry is the other sleeping pokemons they might have disturbed in the region as well. As soon as it says this, a rumble comes from the trees and two Nidokings emerge. Red recognizes the first one by its blinded left eye and immediately backtracks. The huge beast delivers a punch but the boy gets himself out of the way by clinging onto a Victreebell's vines and the attack crashes into the unexpected Victreebell instead. Red hurls himself across the swarm of Weepinbells to dodge the blows from the Nidokings and succeeds in turning the two groups against each other.

The mecha-pidgey compliments on the boy's skills and remarks that despite the large number difference, the Nidokings seem to be gaining the upperhand there. Red watches a Victreebell get smashed onto the ground and immediately tosses out a safari ball to capture it. The mecha-pidgey calls him an idiot to attempt catching a pokemon in such hyper state but gets surpised when the flycatcher pokemon gets trapped successfully. Red explains that the Nidoking has weakened the Victreebell sufficiently for a capture and he now has a pokemon to defend himself. The blinded Nidoking charges towards Red and the boy immediately releases Victreebell to stop it with its vines. With its claws binded securely, the Nidoking seems to have lost its only means of attack. The mecha-pidgey scans the Victreebell with its laser vision and tells Red to unleash poison powder on the drill beast. The boy orders the attack from his Victreebell and the Nidoking instantly groans in pain as it gets hit by a shower of dust-like powder. Red tosses another safari ball and successfully traps his attacker in it. The boy and the mecha-pidgey sigh in relief but find that they are way too early to let down their guards when more Nidokings and Victreebells emerge from the trees behind them.

The next morning, the park warden and his men are still searching for Red with Pika, Poli and Saur. The old man finds the cap of Red behind some bushes and gets worried as he recognizes the area being the habitat of wild Victreebells. All of a sudden, Victreebells and Nidokings start to pop out from the trees and the warden immediately jumps back in horror. The men are about to flee when Red suddenly appears on the head of a Nidoking with the mecha-pidgey. Apparently the boy has had quite a successful night of capture and the warden gawks in disbelief at the many Nidokings, Victreebells, Weepinbells, Bellsprouts, Parasects and Exeggcutes he has caught. Red simply lets out a light-hearted laugh while Pika is glad to have its trainer back...

 It is another peaceful afternoon at Viridian City. In front of the locked doors of the Viridian Gym, two boys are gossiping about the whereabouts of the missing gymleader, Giovanni. One boy remarks that the man has not been seen around for a very long time and wonders when will the gym be re-opened for challenges. His friend says he has never met Giovanni in person and wonders what he looks like. The boy peeks into the dark room through the windows, points towards a metal statue of a middle-aged man, and says it is a sculpture of the gymleader.

After much crawling and climbing, Red has finally made his way out of the Diglett's Cave and finds himself back in Pewter City. He turns around to help a middle-aged man climb out of the cave entrance and remarks that it is one long underground tunnel. The middle-aged man thanks the boy for his help and guidance, and the boy happily fumbles in his pocket to pull out some pokemon 'fossils' he has found in the cave. The man gently laughs and says they are simpy rocks and says they should head towards the museum to see real fossils.

On their way to the city centre, Red keeps looking at the middle-aged man with a sense of nostalgia and asks if they have ever met before. The man replies that he doesn't recall meeting the boy and brushes the matter off. The truth is, the man is in fact Giovanni and Red probably recognizes his face from his statue he saw back in the Viridian Gym during his encounter with the Machoke a few weeks earlier. Giovanni continues to play dumb and explains that he is a pokemon researcher himself. He asks Red if he is a strong trainer and the boy brags that not even gymleaders can match up to his skills. Giovanni gets taken aback by the comment and hesitates a little while the boy continues to talk about his victory over several executives of the evil Team Rocket along his journey.

As the two get closer to the their destination, the air gradually gets warmer and warmer and Red sees that his Pika is starting to get dizzy from all the heat. Giovanni thinks to himself that the abnormal temperature rise does not seem to originate from the weather and guesses that there might be wild Magmars around. Just then, Red lets out a cry and exclaims that the science museum is on fire. The smoke clears a little and two Magmars are seen spewing fire all over the place. Red ushers Giovanni away from the scene and tells the man to keep himself safe while he deals with the fire starters. Giovanni smirks to himself and decides to see just how skillful the boy is.

Red releases his Snorlax, Lax, from its pokeball and the wild Magmars immediately start unleashing flamethrowers towards the snoring creature. The boy explains that Lax can regain its HP during rest and has the ability to withstand attacks for a long time. Giovanni points out that although Snorlax can endure the flames, the fundamental problem remains unresolved. Red realizes this and quickly thinks on a new strategy. He withdraws Lax and releases his Sandshrew, Sand, and orders it to put out the fire with a sand attack. The little mole pokemon starts kicking up sand from the ground and soon stops the fire pokemons from flamethrowing.

Giovanni is genuinely amazed by the boy's quickness in dealing with urgent situations and starts to understand why so many of his underlings have failed to take him down. He then points that although the sand attack has stopped the Magmars' attacks, the plan seems to be of temporary use. Red thinks hard again and orders Sand to run in loops around the wild pokemons whilst continuing to kick up sand. The little Sandshrew starts dashing in circles and soon traps the two Magmars in a massive sandstorm. A few moments later, Sand stops and pants while the fire pokemons have been completely buried in sand. Red compliments on his pokemon's hard work and Giovanni starts to dig out a pokeball from his pocket to help the boy finish off the Magmars. To his surprise, Red withdraws Sand and says the immobile Magmars should cause no harm anymore. Giovanni secretly grins at the remark and puts his pokeball away.

Red takes a look at the burnt museum and sighs that they won't be able to check out the fossils with the building's current condition. Giovanni says there will come another chance and fishes out a piece of old amber from his pocket. He gives it to the boy and says it's a thank you gift for protecting him. Red happily accepts the transparent yellow stone and exclaims that there is a little bug embedded in it. He then shakes hands with Giovanni and the man tells him to hurry on his journey. Red waves goodbye and trots off joyously while the man watches him from behind with an evil grin.

Giovanni muses to himself that the boy has great potential but still lacks experience with pokemons. For one, he has failed to realize that wild Magmars have strong fighting wills and would not give up on their enemies easily. The sand-covered Magmars behind the man start to shake and all of a sudden, wiggle free of their restraints and charge towards him. But Giovanni is prepared. As soon as the Magmars get close enough, a Cloyster pops out of nowhere and instantly freezes them solid.

As his frozen attackers lay immobile on the ground, the man slowly walks away and recalls the bits and pieces of his interesting encounter with the boy who has defeated two of his executives, Lt. Surge and Koga. He puts on another evil grin and assures himself that the boy is still no match for Team Rocket as the wind blows his jacket open and reveals a sweater with a big red R on the left chest...

 Out in the waters of Route 19, Red is using the Item Finder to locate the HM03 with his Poliwrath, Poli, and Krabby, Kra. The two light bulbs on the device start to blink as the boy recalls learning about the HM from Prof. Oak earlier. Oak has told him that out of the 5 HM moves, his Pika has learnt Flash, his Saur Cut, his Lax Strength, and that he still lacks the two skills Fly and Surf. The old man has also remarked that in order to progress to his next destination, the Seafoam Islands, he would need the Surf HM to help him across the waters. Red gets a little ticked off when he remembers Green's Golduck has already learnt the move and hurries on with his search for the HM. A few moments later, the two light bulbs on the Item Finder light up completely and the boy spots a pokeball lying among rocks on the sea bed. He is about to dive deeper to claim his find when a school of Magikarps and Tentacools suddenly swarm in front of him. The boy wonders what is going on and turns around to find a huge Dragonite swimming towards him. He gasps in horror as the dragon pokemon flaps its tail and sends him flying out of the waters and landing on his bottoms on the rocks onshore.

Red gets frustrated and wonders how will he be able to go near the HM with the massive creature lurking in the waters like a wrath. Left with no choices, the boy decides to resort to his Pika and rely on its electric advantage in water battles. Pika feels uncertain but goes with its trainer's orders anyway. With Saur's vines tied around its waist, the little rat slowly swims towards the Dragonite, which appears to be enjoying the waters, and unleashes a thundershock towards the creature's back. The Dragonite turns around with a aggrevated look on its face and Pika realizes it's in big trouble. Red motions Saur to draw up its vines and as soon as Pika resurfaces, the angry Dragonite leaps out of the waters with glaring eyes. Red releases his Snorlax, Lax, and has it body slam the dragon pokemon immediately.

While the two giant creatures continue their fight, the boy takes the chance to retrieve the HM, but his plan falls short when Lax and the Dragonite's combined weight start to cause the rocky shore to crumble. Lax gets knocked over and smashes into the rocks, turning the small piece of ground Red is standing on to fall apart and throwing the boy into the waters. Red holds his breath and tries to reach for the HM, but the Dragonite dives in and destroys the device with a hyperbeam. The attack also stirs up the sea bed and a massive boulder lands on Red's right leg, pinning him to the bottom of the sea and rendering him immobile. The boy weakly calls for his Poli and is starting to lose his breath when a Gyarados suddenly pops out from nowhere and entangles itself around the Dragonite. In his haze, Red sees a mermaid-like creature coming to his rescue while the two dragons battle out.

In a flash of eye, the mermaid moves away the boulder and brings the boy to the surface and just as immediately disappears. Red regains his consciouness and finds himself clinging onto a Starmie. He takes a look at the Gyarados and feels a sense of nostalgia when the creature turns to grin at him. The Dragonite fires another hyperbeam and Red immediately tells the Gyarados to counter with the same attack. The two hyperbeams meet with a loud bang and sends water gushing up in every direction As the smoke slowly clears, the Dragonite lets out a cry and plummets into the sea with a loud thump. Red cheers for the victory when a girl suddenly leaps out from the waters and lands on Gyarados. The boy recognizes her as the Cerulean gymleader, Misty, and is shocked to see her there.

Misty holds up the destroyed HM03 and says the device has been rendered dysfunctional. Red gets upset and the gymleader offers to give him a ride towards the Seafoam Islands on her Gyarados. The boy lightens up and the two give a thumbs-up to each other...

 On the far off islands to the south known as Seafoam, the legendary freezing bird, Articuno, hovers above the island's twin mountains and slowly descends towards its resting place in the frozen caves. Out on the rocky cliffs, Team Rocket members spot the legendary creature and hurries to trail after it.

Red is struggling hard to cling onto Misty's Gyarados while the sea dragon takes him across the waters to the Seafoam Islands. Misty sits on her spinning Starmie and laughs at the boy's hideous moves. Red gets embarrassed and says he would get the hinge of things soon. He lets go of one hand but quickly realizes they are about to crash onto the island shore. He yells for Gyarados to stop but ends up giving his orders too late and plunges into the sand head on with the pokemon. Misty laughs even more and remarks that the boy should learn to be aware of the things around him. Red pulls himself out of the sand and the gymleader tells him that the Seafoam Islands are known to be the home of the legendary bird, Articuno. She then says that Surf is a very important technique for travelling on waters and suggests Red take her Gyarados with him as the HM03 has been damaged. She adds that she has sufficiently tamed the Gyarados since their last encounter and that he seems to bond with the pokemon quite well. The gymleader says she has to go back to the gym and trades the sea dragon to Red in exchange for his Krabby, Kra, before taking off on her Starmie. The boy watches her slowly disappear on her spinning star-shaped pokemon and wonders why she is in such a hurry. Misty takes a look back at the island and silently apologizes to Red, adding that it is important that he collects all the badges as soon as possible.

Later, Red is wandering around the island and searching for Articuno while a few TR members are spying on him. The boy feels the air getting colder and colder and sees most of the trees and plants withered. He releases Pika, Poli, Saur, Lax and Eevee, which he named Vee, then decides to introduce his new party member to them. Gyarados pops out from a pokeball and Pika, Poli and Saur immediately stiffen and step back. The boy realizes they must have had not so good an impression of the atrocious pokemon from their encounter before. He is about to think of a way to solve the problem when a Muk suddenly leaps out from the bushes to attack him. Pika immediately jumps to the rescue but Gyarados cuts in quicker and slams the poison pokemon away. Red orders his pokemons to assist in the fight, but Pika, Poli and Saur feel a little uncertain of themselves in front of their mighty new companion and hesitate to move. The boy gets frustrated and orders his Gyarados to fire another attack. Just then, a metallic ninja star narrowly misses him and the gang of TR members emerge from the rocks. The gang leader states that he would not let him interfere with their plan to capture Articuno, and it is only then that the boy sees a huge block of ice next to the him with the silhouette of a giant bird inside.

The gang leader explains that the legendary Articuno has very acute senses and freezes itself everytime it detects the presence of enemies, but adds that it would not thwart their work as they plan to snag the bird away together with the ice. The man orders his Muk to wrap itself around the frozen Articuno and Red immediately tells Gyarados to stop the sludge pokemon. But to his shock, the sea dragon has a atrocious expression on its face and starts thrashing about frantically. The boy recognizes the look as the one it had during their first encounter near Mt. Moon and realizes the pokemon must be suffering from a traumatic syndrome that reminds it of the horrifying experience in the TR lab everytime it encounters members of the evil organization. The gang leader orders Muk to attack Gyarados and the two end up crashing into the ice block of Articuno, freeing the bird from its constraints. The legendary pokemon starts to fly away and the TR members instantly sprint after it.

As Muk continues its assault on the frantic Gyarados, Red gets deperate and falls to his knees to beg his hesitant pokemons to render help. Vee runs up to its trainer with a determined look and Red knows that the little Eevee must feel Gyarados's pain as it has gone through the same nightmare before. Pika, Poli, Saur and Lax exchange looks with each other and decide to help their new friend. Pika shocks Muk with a thunderbolt while Lax delivers a mega punch to it, temporarily freeing the sea dragon from its attacker. Meanwhile, the TR members have caught up with Articuno and the bird turns around to flap its blue wings, creating a massive hail storm towards the men. Muk breaks free of Red's pokemons and once again charges towards Gyarados. Articuno sees this and freezes the poison pokemon just in time. Red is surprised that the legendary pokemon came to his rescue but gets delighted as the look on Gyarados's face returns to normal.

Articuno lifts off and the TR members once again give chase. Red watches the men disappear into the mountains and wishes that the legendary bird would escape from its pursuers. He then turns around to thank his pokemons for helping Gyarados. Poli, Saur and Lax return the compliment with a grin while Pika and Vee look up to smile at the big sea dragon. Red is glad that his pokemons have finally accepted Gyarados as their new companion and they all cheer for the new addition as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon...
