Simple. She/He watched the calves drink the milk and figured it was edible...Now, you might think: "Ewww that's gross only someone with a sick mind would drink another animal's fluids" but the world was far less developed all those years ago, and I'm sure food was often scarce. People eat blood sausages after all.....if it's edible, they ate it. It's from the mind of a survivalist.
