Leviathan(2015-01-16 22:28:28)This is a story I wrote a while ago.
This is how everything begins, and how everything ends. The sands of time giving new meaning to a forgotten land. He had just began to dismiss his past in that world, and begin to hope he could find peace in a new one. But he couldn't have known that this new world was waiting only to bring him back to the world he longed to escape...
"Allow me to show you something extraordinary!" The salesman said, standing in front of his street-side cart, attempting to woo the townsfolk into buying his product. "This is no ordinary mask! This is the mask of legend!" The salesman added. This caught Links attention. A mask? What kind of mask?
"This mask does much more than make you look different! It makes you feel different as well!" The salesman said, now grabbing the attention of most of the people in the square.
"Show us." a deep voice says.
The salesman unloads a box, and reaches inside of it. Pulling out a small black mask with a white line through the center.
That's not at all what I thought it was. Link thinks to himself, just before walking away.
"I can't seem to get that out of my head... I've nearly forgotten. But there is something that keeps pulling me back to that memory... What mask?"
"Did you hear about the disappearances?" Link hears a teenage boy tell his mother. "Yeah. There have been like, ten people disappear from just outside Laruna Grotto. Darla said that her brother went there with a friend, and they went into the cave, and then his friend just vanished." The teenager went on to say.
He just... vanished?
Link immediately set foot towards the outer gates, in the east side, near the path to Laruna Grotto. The guard stopped him. "There are monsters out there. It's dangerous to go without a weapon... Oh! I see you have a sword and a shield! Be careful now." The guard said, prior to letting Link through.
Aeres was a nice land. Fairly grassy, green, and peaceful. Seemed more favorable and thriving than any other land Link remembered. From the outer gates of the town, he found a gravel road leading to a sign with many different arrows on it.
Once he found the arrow pointing to Laruna Grotto, he immediately began running in that direction. It took him about forty- five minutes to get there on foot. Had he taken the carriage like the others, he would have gotten there in fifteen. Oh well.
Laruna Grotto was a decent little cave with a large body of stone that stretched out to the center of the large underground lake, almost like a pathway. Some believe it was man-made, while others prefer glades to caves.
The strange thing is, there was only one way in, and one way out. There was nothing that you couldn't see. No corners, no rooms, no nothing. Just a large cave, with a straight piece of land stretching to the middle. Nothing more, nothing less. How can somebody just disappear? Link was about to find out.
Link walked steadily along the stone formation, trying his best to take the scenery in. He reached the end of the formation, and found nothing. Just a large lake and some rocks.
He turned around, and began to make his way back out of the grotto to investigate the outside. He would have continued, had he not felt something strange. He couldn't quite put his finger on it. “Oh, that's right!†he said to himself. “I can't move.†He added, it donning on him that he was completely paralyzed, and his neck hurt severely. He then began to feel himself being lifted up. Quickly, he was pulled into the air. He couldn't see what, but something was holding him. He lost sight of the already dimly-lit cave, and was now in a tunnel, traveling fast through it. Was this what happened to the others?
He figured, since he couldn't move, he would just wait it out to see what happens. So he did, and he was not disappointed. The tunnel opened eventually, to a large hole in a stone wall just above a spring. It was like the entrance to a cave, but far too high for anybody to reach. Unless you are a giant monster, that is.
Link could see the creature climb out of the hole, over the spring, and onto the ground. At this time, Link began to regain feeling in his arms. Just in time for the creature to set him down, and crawl back into the hole. Link regained feeling just in time to turn around, and see the large insect-like legs go back into the hole. “Well, I guess I have my answer.†Link said to himself. “But where am I?â€
Link looked around, and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Everything looked fine. Everything looked peaceful. Except for where he was. The spring was the only dark place he could see for miles. He tried to take in his surroundings. In the distance, were a bunch of trees, and a glade of some sort. On the horizon, he noticed a large tower. “Guess that's my first stop.†he noted.
With that, he was off. He began another journey to yet another place in which the contents were -Yet again- completely unknown to him. But hey, never stopped him before.
It didn't take long to get to the entrance of the forest. There was a path leading straight to it, on top of it being marked with a large tree, so he couldn't of missed it even if he tried. He went in between the trees that marked the opening, and went on along the path in the deep wooded area. It was all nice and shady, and there were sticks and leaves all over the ground. It looked deserted. “Has nobody been here in years?†he said to himself. Just as he said that, almost as if on queue, there was a crackling noise from behind a tree up ahead. “No, wait, scratch that. Come out, whoever you are!†He yelled, unsheathing his sword.
A small boy emerged from the tree, and looked at Link with his most sincere, sorry, adorable face he could possibly muster. “Disgusting.†Link said. “What are you?†Link asked the boy. “Um, Human.†The boy said to link.
“Prove it.†Link ordered. “How?†“Draw blood. If it's red, you live. Otherwise, you die.†Link said, thrusting his sword forward slightly. The boy bent over, and pricked his finger on a thorn. Sure enough, the blood was red. “Oh... What are you doing out here?†Link said apologetically. “I was picking wild berries for my mother.†The boy explained. “Wait, where do you live?†asked Link. The little boy grabbed Links hand, and led him through a path, a clearing, and a few bushes of thorns (Possibly on purpose.) before arriving at a quaint little town in the middle of the woods. The town was perfect. The townsfolk seemed nice, and the place was lively and clean. There was a stable with horses in it near what seemed like a shop. Link would have to visit that later. “Finally, civilization!†Link exclaimed. “How did you get here?†the boy asked kindly. “Um... On a carriage?†Link said, trying to spare the boy a few nightmares.
The boy led Link to his mother and brother, who lived in a nice two story house near a gate that led to an opening. Through the gate, Link was able to see the tower he was headed for. Granted, it was pretty far away.
Link explained to the boys mother what all exactly had happened to him. “Oh my gosh!†she exclaimed. “Here, you can stay in our guest bedroom tonight.†she added. Too tired to argue for politeness sake, Link accepted. He went and familiarized himself with the place he would be sleeping, found all the exits, and made sure he was well aware of where all weapons were at. Just as he was about to open the bathroom door, the boys mother was heard from behind. “There are washcloths underneath the sink.†To which Link replied with a hearty “What the hell?!! Don't sneak up on me like that!†As he clenched his chest.
He then stepped into the bathroom to use it.
After he got out, he smelled food. But not just regular food. Good food. The kind of food that would put a royal chef to shame. “That sure does smell like the best thing in the entire freaking universe.†Link said, stepping into the dining area. “Mommy makes really yummy food.†The boy said.
Link sat down, and started up a conversation. “So, Whats your name, kid?†Link asked. To which the boy responded with “Leo! And this is my brother Joana.†while simultaneously motioning to his brother, who apparently didn't speak much. “I'm Maria.†the mother said. “Well. You all seem like a happy family.†Link noted. “We are.†Maria said, placing a plate of something unknown, yet strangely delicious looking in front of Link. They immediately dug in, and continued to exchange conversation. “So what's the history of this place?†Link asked. “The town was founded some forty years ago. I grew up here with my parents before they passed away. After that, I lived in this house by myself until I met Edward. He was always so kind to me. He seemed like the perfect husband, and father to my boys here.â€
“What happened to him?â€
“We never found out. He went to the woods one day to hunt... Never came back.â€
“You didn't even find an article of clothing? Maybe blood?â€
“No... He told us that he was going to go hunt. We knew exactly where he hunted. He always went around the woods on the east side of town, then washed his hands at the spring before coming home with whatever he managed to kill. It was never mandatory that he hunt, because people were always offering us the food they were too full to eat. It's one of the advantages of a small village I guess.†Maria continued. “We searched for two weeks, day and night. We looked all throughout the woods, around the spring, the outskirts of town, everywhere... No sign of him was ever found. He disappeared.â€
“Wow. That's very strange. Has that happened before?â€
“No. Just with him.. It was two years ago.†She sighed. “I remember daddy used to help me with my nightmares when he was here.†Leo piped up. “He would always play drums for me when I would†wake up at night.â€
“Well,†Link said. “it sounds as if you have fond memories of him. Maybe he will turn up someday.â€
“Yeah,†Maria agreed. “maybe someday...â€
With that, dinner was eaten, and it was time for bed. Link went off to the guest room, and the family to their respective rooms. The guest bedroom was one room over from Maria's room, and the boys' bedroom was one room over from the kitchen. Maria went into her room, and locked the door shortly after tucking the kids in. Now that the room was quiet, Link could finally get some rest. He lie there for a moment and thought to himself. He took the road through to forest, and ended up at the spring. He disappeared some two years ago. If he ended up at the spring, he would have already had killed something...
Link sat up, and didn't bother to don his tunic. Just his boots and his sword and pants. He left the house, and borrowed one of the horses from the stable, as quietly as humanly possible. He rode the horse back to the spring where the monster had left him before. “Something... He would have left something...†Link said. He got off the horse, and slipped out of his boots. The spring was fairly deep, and he couldn't see to the bottom. He dove in, and began to swim to the bottom. “Please don't let there be a creature in here. Please don't let the be a creature in here. “ He thought to himself. When he got to the bottom, he figured he had enough time to look around before he went back up to the surface for air. Never a better time for strong lungs.
He sifted his hands around in the sand at the bottom, and found nothing. He began to feel like he needed a bit of air, and quickly looked around for a pocket. To his surprise, there was one in the side of the stone wall. He swam into it, and stuck his head through the pocket, and gasped for air. He sat there for a moment and breathed until he had regained his strength enough to keep looking. He swam back out, and sifted his hands through the dirt some more. “This is pointless.†Link thought to himself. “Even if something did fall down here, there would be enough dirt washed on top of it now to where I would need a shovel to find it.â€
He decided it was pointless, and began swimming back up to the surface. The moon was full and bright, and illuminated the entire spring. Just before he was above the water, he noticed something. A glinting in the wall underwater. Metal? He swam up, and gathered his air before going back down again. He swam along the stone wall until he got to it. A small metal necklace, with a crystal in the center. “Was this his?†He thought to himself. He attempted to grab the necklace, but it broke apart in his hands. The crystal was released from the necklace, and Link grabbed it before it eluded his grasp. “This must have been his. So he was taken to Hyrule... Looks like it's not just a one way street after all.†Link thought to himself as he swam back up. He was extremely wet, so he neglected to don his boots at this time. He just mounted the horse, and rode back into town. He again, very quietly, led the horse back into it's stable, and locked it back up. He crept back into the house, and managed to find a match and a candle to examine the crystal. Well, It was definitely colored odd. It was white, and the center was black. Did Edward really own this? Link looked around for pictures of Edward. He found one on top of the cupboard, but he wasn't wearing any necklace. Maybe it wasn't his.
Link didn't want to wake Maria up for no reason if it wasn't Edwards, so he just went back to bed. He lay on the guest bed, and looked at the crystal for a moment. He then put it in his pocket, and passed out.
“This is where everything begins, and everything ends, Link.†A deep voice is heard. “You can not run from what already happened. Don't fight me.†The voice continues. Link is standing in a dark room. Lightning strikes, and a small figure is illuminated in the darkness. It shakes it's head and laughs. Lightning strikes again. The figure is wearing something on it's face. Some sort of mask. “Wait.... Where have I seen that before?†Link says to himself. “I know you...†The figure grows taller, and it's arms grow longer. “It's you..!!! MAJORA!!!†Link shouts. The figure laughs. “You're out of time.â€
Link is startled awake. Only to see an equally frightening sight. Maria, standing above him with a kitchen knife. “Die!†She yells, as she thrusts the knife at him. “What the hell?!†Link shouts, kicking her in the stomach before the knife makes contact with his body. “You have defied Majora! You must be cleansed! You must be cleansed with death!†Maria mumbles at Link.
“What are you talking about?! What about Majora?†Link stands up, and the crystal falls out of his pocket. Maria doesn't notice it. “You have defied our master. This town is cursed because of you!!†Maria yells. “What master?!†Link retorts.
“This town has lived under the protection of Majora for decades. You are unclean!†Maria snarls.
“Well... I'm not going to let you kill me!†Link says. It was at the time that Maria noticed the crystal. “W-Where did you get that...?†Maria asks, now nearly crying. “No no no. Do not try to change the subject. We are discussing your actions!†Link says, grabbing the crystal. “That was Edwards. He said it was the only way we would ever-†Maria cuts herself off. “The tower.†She says, astonished. “What? The tower?†Link says. “You must not make it to the tower!!!!†Maria screeches, leaping into the air onto Link. “What the hell is it with you?!!†Link yells, managing to push her on to his bed. He quickly gathers his clothes as she was disoriented, and runs out the the door with the crystal. He jumps onto the same horse he used before, and unlocks the gate, setting it free. He steers it towards the outer gate, where the tower can be seen, and the horse jumps over the gate. He turns back and notices that have the town was standing at the gate, watching him. “Creepy as hell.†Link said to himself. “Looks like it's time to head for that tower.â€
He rode for about an hour before he reached the tower in the distance. It was large, and seemingly made of black marble. It was too tall to see the top. The large wooden door wasn't hard to push open. Inside the tower, was nothing but a large winding staircase. The walls seemed to have a carving on it. Almost like a mural of some kind. Some kind of story? Link began his walk up the staircase, looking at the carving as he walked up. He couldn't understand what it all meant. In each seen, there was this one floating man above four other men. First it was if he was leading them, then in the next scene it looks like he is casting some sort of spell on them. “I don't understand.†Link said to himself.
It took him about two hours to walk to the top of the tower. He got to the top of the staircase, and sat down on the top step to rest. “What now..†he said to himself before turning around. Behind him was a large room, and in the center of it was a pedestal, and two unlit torches. He got up and walked over to the pedestal. There was an empty slot, shaped like a diamond. Link looked around for any keys or chests or anything he could fit in the hole. He tried a rock, but that didn't work. He looked at it for a moment, and tried to think back to what Maria was saying. “He said it was the only way we would ever-†Link remembered the crystal. He took it you of his pocket, and looked at it. Diamond shaped. “What are you?†He asked it. He placed the crystal in the slot.
Both the torches lit a blue flame, and the ground around him shook and knocked him down. He sprung back up and looked at the pedestal, which was now glowing. The crystal disintegrated, and was gone before Link could grab it. Then the pedestal stopped glowing, and the ground stopped shaking. Link waited. “Is that it?!†he yelled at it. “That can't be it!†He yelled a little louder. He waited for a moment. He rested his head on the pedestal. “I don't understand...†He said to himself.
Link lifted his head up slowly, and quickly turned around. “It's you?!†He said is astonishment.
“Hello, Link.â€
I'm an open book, there are few questions I won't answer honestly, no matter how embarrassing.
