One of my friends asked this in a chatroom I used to go to. It ended up getting into a caps lock fight and friendships being ruined.

All because of this question.

So what is soup? Solid or Liquid?

Soup is food.


Soup is just food put into a liquid, Meats, veggies, etc, all broiled in water or broth. So technically, food is both. But it's easier to call it a liquid by some people. I just call it food. :/

It can have solid bits in it (taters, carrots, beans etc.) but they are surrounded by liquid, so it's sort of both unless it's something like broth which is all liquid.

My grandma makes amazing soup, potato, carrots, beef, beans, spicy linguisa, some sausage, and bits of cabbage and topped with pepper. Preeeetty good.

A liquid is defined as "a substance flowing freely but of constant volume". A liquid takes the shape of it's container. If your soup matches either of those definitions, it's a liquid.

The soup itself is a liquid. What is in the soup, such as vegetables, is usually not.

It's a mixture. The soup as a whole isn't just one state of matter unless it's like tomato soup or something.

Whatever is in it makes no difference, be it noodles, chicken or whatever.

Soup as a whole isn't a liquid. There are solid particles in it. Sure, most of the soup is a liquid, but not the whole thing altogether.

When you see a cloud of dust particles, do you call that whole thing a gas? Of course not. You call the dust particles solids on theur own, and the air they float around in a gas.

When we say soup, we mean the water. The broth. Whatever is in the soup is usually a solid, and it's in the name of the soup. For example, chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, cheese dorito soup. That being said, my point still stands, soup is just soup, and soup itself is a liquid.
