Yesterday in mega's Vocaloid thread, there were a few people wondering why people liked anime at all. I'm hoping I can shed some light on the subject using my own preferences and experiences watching anime and reading manga.

Disclaimer: Since I'm only speaking from my own preferences, I cannot speak for the anime group as a whole. We all have our own reasons for watching anime or reading manga.

Anime tells a story-
I grew up reading books. I love books. I read a lot. At times, I'd rather read than hang out with my friends.

I love stories. There is a lot of anime out there, so that means there's a lot of stories I can enjoy, right?

When I was younger, I used to watch a lot of cartoons
As I grew older and read longer books with more drawn out and complex storylines, short, 15 minute episodes with hardly any connection to a central cannon didn't cut it anymore.

Story+Cartoon= Anime

"So Nutsy, do you watch any anime as long as it has a story?"
No. Just like with books, there are certain genres of anime I don't like. For example, I can't stand Slice of Life anime. Especially when they don't go anywhere.

Recently, my older brother has tried to get me into Ergo Proxy. I've watched the first two episodes, and the plot is unclear and I honestly don't care to see it unfold.

Now, I'm fine with an unclear or vague plot like Psycho-Pass or Attack on Titan, but when I have no desire to see everything come together, I don't watch it.

Serial Experiments Lain is an example of a confusing anime that made me want to understand the plot. The first 5 episodes of this 13 episode series made no sense at all, but the ambience and atmosphere compelled me to watch it completely through three times.

"So you only watch anime with a compelling storyline?"
-Yes. I could care less about the art style or the fact that it's Japanese.
"So you don't force yourself to enjoy everything Japanese?
-No, I don't. The people that do that are faggots and weeaboos.
"Would you watch an American production if it had a good story?"
-Yes, I would.

"But Nutsy, Vocaloid doesn't have a storyline, and practically all your posts are about it!
-No, it doesn't. That brings me to the other reason I like anime.

I love music. I love music.-
There's always a song playing in my head. Anime just happens to have good songs. Down there in the spoiler are two of my favorite anime songs. Don't worry, they don't have vocals.
Spoiler: show

"Do you only listen to Japanese music?"
-Yes, but not intentionally. If anybody has some nice, non-oriental music, I'd love to try it out.

"Would you watch an anime just because it has a good soundtrack?
-No, but I'd certainly be willing to try it out.

"You've talked about why you like anime, but what about manga?
-Honestly, I don't like manga that much. It's all black and white and it's hard to read. I've never really been into comic books either. I'd much rather read it in all text. The only time I'll ever read manga is when I'd be missing part of the story without it. So far, that's only happened to me once.

"So Nutsy, between books, music, anime, and manga, which do you like best?
-I think I've made it clear that I like books best. Recently I've been fortunate enough to stumble upon a series of books, music, anime, and manga that's all connected to a central cannon. The books, whoever bad the translation, were my favorite part.

"Even though you've tried answering any questions before they're asked, I still have a question for you."
-Leave a comment and I'll answer it as best as I can.

It's fixed. It's terrifying what one little "/" can do.

Asking someone why they watch anime is like watching someone why they watch reality TV.

@Kishy- What's the point of doing something if you don't know why you're doing it?

>watching Elfen Leid
>Not reading the vastly better Manga

>Watching Non-original animes rather than just reading/playing through the source material.

The only Japanese food I like is Pocky.

Another thing

>Corpse Party compressed into 5 episodes with no OVA

>Dangan Ronpa compressed into 13-16 episodes, investigations were incomplete, trials didn't allow for viewers to try solving the mystery themselves

>Helsing's storyline shifts from Alucard vs Millennium to Seles dealing with her vampirism. Needed Helsing Ultimate to get released for the anime to get it's together

>Sword Art Online exists

I haven't seen a single one of those.

Like I said before, if the manga is missing something, or the anime and manga have different storylines, I'll read the manga.

"Ugh, I need to go masturbate now. Whenever I get mad or worried, that's what I do."

There are plenty of websites that stream anime for free. Try Kissanime

If you mean you want to purchase a box set, those can get pretty expensive, so I wouldn't recommend buying one unless you're sure you'll watch it over and over.
Dimentia (2014-09-18 22:57:21)
I go on youtube. But thanks!

That was just a simple way of putting it.
