Because ChampionLeake jumped on the review bandwagon, I might as well, too.
I'm personally not doing this to annoy you in any way shape or form.
Hi, I'm ayuki. Former 3DSPlaza forum user (as you can tell) and an avid PC gamer. Today, I will be reviewing the Source powered, popular sandbox game, Garry's Mod.
What is Garry's Mod? Garry's Mod is well, obviously a sandbox game which runs off of the 11 year old Source Engine, which has Steam Workshop integration.
Gameplay: 06/10
Gameplay in Garry's Mod is pretty much everything. With tons of replayability, and custom content, you'll rarely find yourself bored. Garry's Mod (vanilla, that is) contains already a fair amount of content, for example HL2 character ragdolls, which everyone either launches them into space or makes obscene dupes of G-Man and Alyx. Anyways, the whole gameplay aspect about Garry's Mod is the fact that you can play it in however way you want it. Build a rocket and hit the skybox. Build a fort, and defend it from Combine soldiers. Shoot things till you're out of ammo. The possibilities seem endless. Now, moving over to the non-vanilla side, and into Garry's Mod WITH workshop content, this greatly improves the game. Think of the Workshop as a marketplace FULL of free DLC, made by countless members of the community. You have Gamemodes, SWeps, Models, Tools, NPC's, and Dupes.
Gamemodes make the game run in different ways. E.g, Trouble in Terrorist Town makes the game run so that there is one detective, a few traitors and however many innocents. The aim of the game is to survive, but to kill the traitors without killing anyone else. The Traitors play differently, meaning that they have to kill EVERY player except the other traitors.
SWeps, meaning Scripted Weapons, are the gun packs of the game. You can get Admin guns (insta kill weapons) to nukes, and it really adds on to Roleplay, Deathmatches or even building if you want to use the models! These will help increase your replayablitity, as you can keep coming back for more weapons, finding several million more ways to pwn your friends or enemies.
Models, which I've mentioned in the last section on SWeps, are so to say the unusable items of the game. You can spawn models in, whether they are Ragdolls which you can play around with, or actual models, stuff like tables, chairs, laptops, bouncy castles, which you can use in Roleplay or to just screw around.
Tools are one of the main features of the game. You barely see any on the workshop, but it doesn't matter, as you already have a ton of preset tools. There are several tools to use, for instance the rope tool, which can be used in tying models to walls, or roping out swear words because you are too cool. You also have things like the weld tool, which are useful as everything doesn't magically stick together in Garry's Mod.
Moving to NPC's, these things are scripted Non-playable Characters, in which you can use them as weapon test dummies or modify their bone properties so they're human giraffes. These things don't really increase the playability, as you already have some base HL2 NPC's to shoot.
Dupes (which. I'd rather not mention,) are playermade creations in which they are either big bulky machineguns that you need a gazillion addons to spawn in, or it's something sexual, because people are like that.
Sound/Audio: I can't actually rate this
The reason behind the Audio and why I can't exactly rate it is because there is NO music in Garry's Mod. No ambiance, no nothing. It's all down to the mappers, to add ambiance, valid lighting and other sounds and stuff to their maps.
Graphical Quality: 04/10
The graphics aren't really that bad, for a game built on an engine from 2003. They do look pretty, and have some nice effects and textures that look really REALLY clean and polished, but this game is fairly easy to run (lol bf4 looks better on the lowest settings).
Controls + Controller Support: 05/10
The controls in Garry's Mod play out nicely, with WASD to move, mouse to look, Left click to shoot, 123456 (and mouse scroll) to change weapons, Q to bring up the spawnlist (weapons, models etc.) X to voice chat, etc. etc. The reason I rated it down is not because these controls are uncomfortable or anything, it's because of the annoying little things like having to rebind your Suit Zoom and Undo buttons, as well as that there is pretty much NO PS3 controller support, and that Xbox controllers don't have enough bloody buttons to actually do most of the stuff.
Performance: 09/10
The way that this game performs is amazing. It's one of those games that you can have a moderately bad computer and still be able to run it as long as you at least have an Intel HD 3000 and a processor with a higher Ghz than 1.5. This game is similar to Minecraft - No GTX Titans, but no bad specifications from 15 years ago.
Overall Score: 07/10
The reason I have rated this, is because, if you are a PC gamer, this is an all time classic. You will spend tons of hours building forts and shooting your friends, and basically being a virtual you, because the game pretty much has no limits.
