Hi, everybody.

I would just like to warn my fellow Plaza friends about what happens when you illegally download movies and TV shows as torrents.

Yesterday, my ISP, Metrocast sent my family and I a letter stating about how they know that I have been illegally downloading copyrighted content. It said if my mom or dad didn't go into the office and sign a paper that we would have our internet connection cut. They said that the paper said that this time it was only a warning, but next time we could get fined up to $75,000 or no less than $25,000.

I encourage all of you to not download any illegal copyrighted content (such as movies, TV shows, music, etc.) I don't plan on anymore. Oh, and to add to this scare, my grandfather also received a letter from Metrocast saying the same thing. However, my grandfather doesn't download anything illegal. It was from when my uncle lived there back in 2006! If they can backtrack that far, who knows what they can do.

I know that I will not do this anymore. But, I don't want my ISP spying on my internet traffic. Is there any way I can browse the web without being tracked by my ISP?

Methinks your grandfather was downloading things that weren't TV shows, movies, or music. Wink wink. Nudge nudge.

I'd recommend installing the extension HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox or Chrome. This encrypts data as it's transferred.
If you really want to download things and be secretive about it, you can use Tor, which leaves no trace at all.

Read into Tor a bit before jumping into it, it'll help with illegal things though.

Thanks, I was looking into proxy servers yesterday but I didn't have time to do much research so I ended up with a crappy slow HTTPS proxy server that couldnt load videos. And funny, my grandfather is litterly 69 and dont know how to use a computer but thanks!

Well... I download illegal torrents myself, and there is a way not to get caught at all. I use it. Its quite simple...

Well, you gotta use a VPN client. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. There's lot's of them out there. I recommend searching for a top list of them if you don't know of any. One of it's main features is basically changing your IP adress to something random (not yours). They usually have many other features too. Research VPNs to find out a little bit more info.
