The only error is, that forum dwellers (such as Gamesaddict over here) won't get as much points as chat dwellers. And since the forums are deadish, it would take weeks or months to get up to 500 points.

The "mods change username back" concept is very problematic.

I disagree with this. It shouldn't really cost any points just to change your name and have to wait a whole week to do it twice.

I don't see any harm coming from it wing the way it already is.

I'd say that users can change names once every month, so that's 12 times a year, instead of every week, which is 52/53 times a year, that way it can stop constant name changing. And as a bonus, it gives users time to accumulate the necessary points to change name.

But anyway, nice idea!
