My video game senses are tingling.....

Introduction
Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a follow up of sorts to 2010's excellent Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Unfortunately, well a decent game Edge of Time doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. Adding to that is a lack of effort put into porting the console versions to 3DS, which
shows.

Story
Edge of Time has a pretty engaging story, especially for Marvel fans. In the year 2099, scientist Walker Sloan travels back in time to rewrite history in his image. This is caused by the death of the Amazing Spider-Man. So the Spider-Man of the year 2099 has to warn Amazing SpiderMan before this happens. What starts as a simple "don't get killed" story unfolds into something much more dramatic, especially when the true mastermind is revealed.

Graphics
Character models have been toned down a bit from the console versions, but they still look pretty good, especially the two Spider-Men and Anti-Venom.
Unfortunately, level design, which was already bland before, gets even more bland. Whoever designed this game seems to have an unhealthy obsession with the color gray. The cutscenes however are beautiful, taken straight from the HD consoles. The 3D is also pretty good, adding quite a bit of depth. One thing that ruins the somewhat pretty picture is distant enemy framerates. Enemies from far away will appear to be moving at less than ten frames per second.

Sound
The Music is pretty intense, seeing as close calls and near deaths are a big part of the game. The voice acting is splendid, it's hard not to burst out laughing at some of the dialogue the Spider-Men throw at each other. In this area, I'd have to say it even out does Shattered Dimensions.

Gameplay
The gameplay is very similar to Shattered Dimensions, but it doesn't feel quite as fluid. The idea is that there are two different Spider-Men with different abilities, but against standard enemies it usually comes down to mashing Y or X.
There are "puzzles" but those usually involve finding keys to open doors. Lots and lots of doors. Yes, it gets boring after awhile. The game also explores something called "Quantum Physiology." Basically it means what you do in the past affects the future. So if Spidey 2099 is surrounded by robots, they'll go away if present day Spidey smashes the prototypes. It's a good idea, but the game just uses it as an excuse to throw random obstacles at you. But my biggest gripe is the "freefall" sections that Spider-Man 2099 has to do. Essentially you have to dive down an elevator shaft full of un-dodgable obstacles. It's meant to be "fun," but it's not. It's a frustrating annoyance. I do give props to the excellent boss battles however. Unfortunately, they are far and few between.

Set-up
Edge of Time actually has a pretty "neat" setup. All the main action is on the top screen, but the touchscreen has it's uses. Certain actions are perfomed by tapping it. What I thought was interesting was that the Spider-Men communicate via the screen. When one Spidey is in a jam, he'll appear on the touch screen and start yammering at the one you're playing as. Maybe not the most innovative setup, but it's certainly interesting.

Content
The Main game takes about ten hours, but there is plenty to unlock. Figurines, alternate costumes, and a host of upgrades. By beating various chapters on higher difficulties, the game gives you more goodies. Very, very similar to Shattered Dimensions here, which in this case is a good thing.

Conclusion
Edge of Time is a less than stellar follow up to Shattered Dimensions, but Marvel fans will find much to enjoy here. If you are not in to Marvel however, you won't appreciate the great story, and the choppy framerates and repetitive gameplay won't do you any favors.

Overall: 6.5/10

Good review! I never thought of getting this game, but now I really don't want to get it.
What I wanna know is where's the caveman

It's not that bad. I enjoyed some parts of it.

Should have made Web of Shadows for the 3DS. You could actually roam around New York!!!

@Ron1212-I haven't played the console versions of Web of Shadows, just the DS one. I think Shattered Dimensions on 3DS would be amazing, that was a great game.
Hopefully the 3DS version of the Amazing SpiderMan will be good.
But it's not out until July.

@Man-The 3DS version is the same as the console versions, just with toned down graphics.

@Phoenix-True, I have high hopes for both the Amazing Spiderman movie and the game.

Edge of Time is nowhere near the best looking 3DS game.

Mario Kart 7, Revelations, SSFIV 3D, Mercs 3D, Blaze Blue, Tales of the Aybss, and Uprising all look much better.
The 3DS shouldn't be compared to a PSP anyway.
The DS already was, and the DS beat the PSP.
If a 3DS game has PSP level graphics, that isn't a good thing.
