Prologue:

"I am certainly not mad." A demented voice spoke. "But professor! This is clearly insane!" The professor was indeed, mad. Not mad as in the emotional type, but mad, as in the insanically loony type. The professor's assistant, was the sane one. And she kept him from doing harm to himself, or to others.

Well, most of the time. You see, old Professor Ferous (yes, old. nearly one-hundred and twenty years old, though he looked as if he were only fifty.) was an inventor. He loved creating things from scrap and spare parts, but everything turned out like him.

Sick. Demented. Insane.

The sad thing about Professor Ferous, was that he wasn't always this way. One of his previous inventions, (a baseball batter robot) hit Him in the head so hard, that he almost literally lost his mind. The rear of his skull was cracked open and dented. (Thank God for plastic surgery.) Now, this is when he met his assistant, Laura. She was his nurse in the hospital he was admitted into. His family had given up on him, (Tired of his constant failures) and she decided to take care of him. She was in her early twenties at the time, (and he in his late nineties.) when she became his assistant. She felt sorry for the cantankerous old fool, and nurtured him back to health. Everything was fine, everything, except his mind.

Chapter one:

"Surely you can't be serious, professor! This will be the death of you!" Laura protested. "Ah my dear, how do you think I've lived so long?" He asked, smiling. She fumbled for words and simply scowled at him. He had built a steam powered heart, stomach, and liver, and limbs for himself. Being powered by steam, all he ate was coal, which was then burned in his stomach, (taking the cooling effects of water to the extreme) thus boiling a pocket of water in it and sending out steam to the parts described earlier. "Please professor, don't do this." Laura said one more time. What he was trying to do, was replace an eye. Not as simple as you might think. He needed to connect the eye to his brain, without destroying either item. This could easily kill him, or further his success in biological cybernetics. "I'm not helping you with this. Your on your own" Lauren said. "Agreed."

Chapter two:

With much agony and anticipation, (as well as steam and scalding water), the Professor managed to install his new eye, which functioned almost perfectly. He had trouble moving it, but other than that, it fit him well. It looked like a normal eye, except it was glass, and housed a few tiny devices inside. Laura just shook her head when she saw him. "Every day, you become more and more electronic." She said. The professor laughed. He stared at her for a moment and blinked, which was creepy now because the electronic eye had no lid. "You need to accept the fact that people die, Professor. You can't very well live forever." "Balderdash and hogwash! It's possible and I'm living proof!" He started laughing uproariously at this, which made Laura shake her head all the more. "Are you really living? You've got metal innards for crying out loud! You'd be dead by now if you hadn't installed those infernal contraptions." "Indeed. But aren't you the least bit happy I'm still up and running?" "I really cain't say, Professor."

Chapter Three:

Out in the city, the air was..

Smog. The era of steam and fire powered mechanics made the air hurtful to most newcomers lungs. Those that had grown used to the stale, pungent oder only recieved the minor side effects. Two of those being asthma and bronchitis.
