Introduction
The long awaited and much discussed Swapnote(or Nintendo Letter Box in Europe) is finally here! So it's only natural that I have a nice mini review on it for all you guys. What do I have to say? Swapnote is pretty fun and creative, but it's not the smooth, efficient messaging system 3DS owners were hoping for.
Graphics
This is pretty irrelevant, seeing as Swapnote isn't something you would play, but Nintendo certainly made it look nice. Swapnote is full of delightful colors, along with decent use of the 3D effect. The 3D for the most part is pretty subtle, but in some areas you will see pretty good pop/depth.
Sound
Again, not much to say here. Swapnote has music, which I found annoying, but that other people probably enjoy. There are other sounds, such as the notes being sketched, which benefit the app.
Gameplay
Two words. Load times. To be frank, the load times in Swapnote are awful. But that's not the main let down for me. Spotpass is used incorrectly here. The whole idea of Spotpass is that it downloads things for you when you aren't using your 3DS, but in Swapnote, whether it's been five minutes or a day, you have to sit through five to ten minutes of boredom as your notes are downloed. That's like having to download your e-mail, which is just absurd. On the flip side, you will have a great time writing the notes with the touch screen.(more on that next)
Set-up
Here is where Swapnote wins big time. It has a perfect balance between the top and touch screen. You write your notes via the touch screen, and can view them on both. You can also scroll through your notes using either the D-pad, circle pad or touch screen.
Content
There is quite a bit you can do with Swapnote. Send notes via streetpass or spotpass, along with attaching pictures or sounds. However, Nintendo goes a bit overboard with playcoin use. To save a friend's picture/sound it costs a whopping 10 playcoins. To gain the ability to attach sounds at all, it costs 15. You can unlock different letter designs as well, but of course, those also cost playcoins.
Conclusion
All in all Swapnote isn't the ordinary messaging system, nintendo went above and beyond, making it quite the creative little app. However, between the load times and playcoin abouse, it isn't the quick, smooth, messaging system you hoped for.
Overall: 7/10
