After weeks of speculation, Sony officially unveiled its next-generation console during a PlayStation only event held in New York on February 20, 2013.

According to Sony's Andrew House the PS4 will create "experiences that surpass gamers' wildest expectations."

Mark Cerny, lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, told the world that the system had been under development for the last five years, and that its goal was to free developers from technological barriers; making it a console "by game creators for game creators", as Cerny said.

The console's architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." It uses an 8-core 64-bit x86 "Jaguar" CPU, 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM, a local hard drive, and APU technology a, which is typically reserved for "top of the line, high end graphics cards."

The pillars of PS4 are: Simple, Immediate, Social (First social gaming network with meaning), Integrated and Personalized. PlayStation 4 allows games to be resumed right after the console is turned back on. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background, which allows Digital games to be played without all of the data being installed into the hard drive (since part of the game is installed while the rest is downloaded on the background).

The system supports seamless uploads of gameplay, spectating friends' gameplay sessions in real time as well as integrated chat. Players will have profile pages like Facebook integrated to the "full PlayStation ecosystem."

The PlayStation 4 will also "get to know you"; as you play games, the console will register which series, developers and genres you like so that it automatically downloads the new title of the series, new game from the developers, or similar games before you even decide to purchase it.

One of Playstation 4's Hardware Specs were revealed at the PlayStation 4 Announcement on February 20, 2013.

Additional hardware specs have been revealed via Sony Japan.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and "next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX" port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and other social features.

The PlayStation 4 Announcement on February 20, 2013, the PlayStation 4 was confirmed for a holiday 2013 release.

At this time it is not known whether this will be a simultaneous worldwide release or only in certain territories.

A price has not been announced for the PlayStation 4 as of yet.
