Santa is based on Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was granted Sainthood because he was extremely generous to everyone. Surprisingly, he's also the patron Saint of Prostitutes.

Part of the legend goes, Nicholas saw a few prostitutes standing outside and, unlike everyone else that approaced them with money, offered a few words of wisdom, giving them enough money to start over their lives somewhere.
