I, as an intern here at Cartoon Network, am not really supposed to question what is aired or written for the shows. But sometimes, I just have to wonder what the hell's wrong with the people who write this stuff. Just about a month ago, some weird Adventure Time episode got posted all over the internet when it wasn't supposed to, so CN's gotten a bit of a bad reputation lately.
For you to understand what I'm about to tell you, there's something you'll probably need to know. There are times when you get an idea, and it sticks with you. As you know, this happens a lot in creative processes, such as script writing. And sometimes, these ideas are better left untouched. Like what I am about to tell you right now.
There is a "lost episode" of Regular Show, entitled "Punishment Park." There's a reason why this episode was "lost." During this time, we were supposed to make a Halloween special for Regular Show. Somebody suggested we make an hour long special, which was approved. I wasn't there for the initial development process, so I may not be able to fully explain why this happened.
Anyway, me and a couple other screen testers had just gotten the episode and were checking it for quality. We popped the disk into the DVD player and sat down to watch. The title credits started. The normal "Regular Show" title started as normal, but the music was slightly out of sync. It started a bit early, so the last few seconds of the title were silence. Another screener wrote something on a clipboard before returning focus to the episode.
It started with Mordecai and Rigby in the house, goofing off and playing video games as usual. Mordecai was the first to speak. "C'mon Rigby, we should really get back to work before Benson busts his balls." Rigby snickered. "Heh. 'Busts his balls.'" Mordecai responds with a punch in the arm. I let out a little throat laugh. Benson at that moment walks in. "What are you guys doing!?" He seemed a bit angrier than usual. Mordecai started stammering, but Rigby nonchalantly responded. "Relax. We're taking a break. Don't bust your balls over it." The intern with the clipboard took another note.
Benson was VERY angry at this point. "THE TRASH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PICKED UP FOUR HOURS AGO!!! YOU IDIOTS ARE FI-" Benson stopped and returned to normal. "Ugh. Never mind." Mordecai spoke up. "Wait, Benson-" Rigby stopped him. "Chill out. Benson's not on our asses anymore." I raised an eyebrow. I wasn't sure the network would allow the word "ass" to be published on a kid's network, but I kept silent.
It then cuts to late evening. Mordecai and Rigby are eating take-out on the couch while watching a monster movie. Rigby is cowering into a pillow. "Quit being such a baby." Rigby was about to defend himself, but Benson walked back in, holding a box of doughnuts. "Benson! Sorry about the take-out, we'll clean up-" Benson cut Mordecai off. "I'm sorry guys. I've been a bit stressed lately. As an apology, I got you doughnuts." Rigby takes the box. "Sweet! Dibs on the cream filled!" Mordecai ignores him and turns to Benson. "So, you're not mad?" Benson shakes his head. "I'm not mad. But you will be soon..."
Mordecai shrugs it off and takes a doughnut as Benson leaves. "Is it weird to you at all he got us these? He seemed pretty pissed earlier..." Rigby just scoffs. "He said he was sorry. And plus, we got free doughnuts!" Mordecai takes a bite from his at the same time as Rigby. It skipped ahead. The entire box of doughnuts was empty.
"Aw, man! It's like that time I turned into a green blob..." Mordecai just laughs at him. "Bet you were wishing you'd shared the jelly filled with me now, don't you?" Rigby ignored him and groaned. "I need to lie down..." He then falls over unconscious on the floor. Mordecai panics. "Rigby!? RIGBY!!?" But Mordecai himself then falls to his knees and passes out. The screen goes black and moves to the next scene. Mordecai and Rigby both wake up in a darkened room. The screen twitches for a second.
Having read Squidward's Suicide and seen that weird Adventure Time episode, I knew better than to do a frame by frame. Unfortunately, the other employees did not share my knowledge. One of them paused and started backing up. It was a picture of J.G Quintel himself, being hung. The picture looked real. A bit too real. It definitely looked better then anything even a dedicated Photoshopper could make. The clipboard guy frantically wrote something and played the episode.
Mordecai and Rigby looked around, confused. "Where are we?" Rigby was visibly afraid. M-Muscle Man? Y-you'd better not be p-pranking us..." A familiar voice sounded. "You'll see him later." Mordecai was first to respond. "Benson! Thank God you're here! Where are we?" Benson replied with one word: "Hell."
