Allow me to begin by saying the following: this is only a suggestion post; I am not employed with Nintendo or any video game developer. These requests are merely observations from a Mario fan who has been rather disappointed by the more recent games (Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. Wii/2, etc.).

I believe that the following changes should be made to the next 2D-style Mario game:
*A better overworld layout. If you're going to do an overworld layout for a 2D platformer, why not take a page from Super Mario World: expansive, and interesting. And while we have an interesting overworld, why not have it be free-roaming, and throw in a 3D viewpoint option (Super Mario 64-like)? There could be coin blocks, walls to smash open off the beaten path, etc, and would be a much more engaging experience.
*Add some new worlds, change some others. Everyone loves a beautiful desert, or a jungle, field, or underwater scene, but a change in scenery and gameplay (physics) seems almost necessary at this point. Also, music. I'd like to hear either a completely original soundtrack, or one with updated music from the Mario Land, World, and 64 soundtracks, not the same tracks from NSMBDS (again).
*Space World. My favourite Mario games are the first two Mario Land games for the GameBoy (which are available on the Nintendo eShop now), mainly cos they have original, fresh worlds and enemies that we've seen little to nothing from since. Exploding turtles, those creepy hockey-mask creatures, and, most importantly, a Space World. Remember, in SML2? That was rather brill. Making one that plays like that, and has the visuals of Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 7 would be more than welcome.
*Make it longer. Enough said on this point, I believe. :l
*Donkey Kong and Pauline. Yes, Koopa is cool. But there's no arguing that he's been overused. Yes, he can be in this hypothetical game, but should only be battled once or twice throughout the game. To make the game longer, put DK and Pauline in, too, making them every bit as important as Koopa and Peach. Also, unique other bosses would be helpful, like with the Paper Mario series. Also, space aliens could abduct Peach, Pauline and Daisy, giving Mario reason to go to the Space World.
*Graphics. This should be a given, but I think this new Mario game should feature the most beautiful and colourful graphics the 3DS has to offer. Just saying, when you compare SM3DL or NSMB2 to the likes of Zen Pinball 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, Ocarina Of Time 3D or Dead Or Alive, they come up graphically short. Big time. :l

Please feel free to add more suggestions in the comments, but these are the only things I can think of to make the next Mario game better than the norm (at least, for the moment...). Hope you all found this enjoyable to read, and that my points were well-communicated. Cheers, God bless.

OK, one more point to add to the list (for now):

*Bringing back old power-ups. The Tanooki suit returned in SM3DL, much to the joy of hardcore SMB3 fans, so, why not bring back the Mallet (Donkey Kong) and Bunny hood (SML2), as well? :l ... ...
Like I said before, feel free to pitch in suggestions anytime you feel like it! Thank you, and God bless.

Haven't given much thought on a new DK game; personally, I'm still waiting for the arcade DK and Donkey Kong Land to be released on the virtual console. Cool ideas, tho.
Crush42 (2012-09-09 07:19:13)
^ YES!!!
diazbro9 (2012-09-09 18:29:56)
I've been waiting for one. -Phoenix

Whatever happened to the new stuff they add? There was always something new, creative, and cool. Now its the same junk used all over again. For example, SM3DL had so many new and cool things to do. NSMB. 2 looks fun but reuses the whole story of NSMB...

I'll wait for a challenging Mario. I'd rather get HoR,KH 3D or a better game.
Add me on psn to play Battlefield,DCUO,Skate or something.

My PSN is SirDiaz321

Arkham Knight looks amazing

I want a Mario that gets the most out of the system that it is on, like Galaxy 2, which had 60 fps, beautiful visuals, and massive and expansive levels.

3D Land is great but it is only 30 fps and doesn't even have anti-aliasing, plus levels are shorter and smaller than I would like.
Crush42 (2012-09-30 03:44:06)
^ I would also love an expansive, fully-rendered 3D Mario game, and that would be epic. So far, tho, it seems that Team Ninja (with Dead Or Alive: Dimensions) and Capcom (with the two Resident Evil games) have been the only groups to really push the 3DS hardware for its powerful graphics.

A 3d-Mario game when all the princesses (Rosalina, Daisy, Peach etc) get kidnapped and every version of mario&luigi (paper mario, 8 bit mario etc) team up to rescue her.
pikarceus (2012-10-01 01:57:19)
@Crush42

I would say Nano Assault also pushes the 3DS, that is one beautiful game.

You also can't forget Kid Icarus: Uprising, Monster Hunter 3G/Ultimate, and Monster Hunter 4.

Definitely agree with the Capcom statement, out of the top ten best looking 3DS games, they probably have 5 in there. (The two Resident Evil games, the two Monster Hunter games, and Super Street Fighter IV 3D)

The other five would have to be DOA: Dimensions, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nano Assault, Beyond the Labyrinth (Japan only sadly), and that upcoming Castlevania game.

Mario Kart 7 is smooth and slick, but again, no anti-aliasing (Come on Nintendo, I hate jaggies!), and blurred textures, and some objects like Bullet Bill are way too polygonal.

Ocarina Time 3D has really poor visuals, only 30 fps, no water particles, no anti-aliasing, lots of blocky objects (Link's fingers, Great Fairy), but on the plus side the environmental textures aren't too bad.

Star Fox 64 3D looks pretty good though.

MGS 3D looks pretty good, but absolutely horrible framerate and pop-in and pop-out.

^ Forgot about Nano Assault. I didn't count the MH games, nor Beyond The Labyrinth, cos they're (at the moment, anyways) Japanese-exclusives. SF643D and KI:U did have pretty and colourful graphics, but from what I've played so far (not much, admittedly) the graphics don't seem too much better than OOT3D (which I think are about Gamecube or low Wii quality). But yes, thank you for pointing those out!
pikarceus (2012-10-01 22:32:33)
Now, not to start a graphics argument, but OoT3D looks significantly worse than most Gamecube and Wii games. I'd say it looks like a mid-level Dreamcast game or a very low level PS2 game.

Kid Icarus: Uprising has amazing environments, plus the draw distance used in it (Chapter 15 especially) far outclasses OoT3D.

The character models aren't perfect, but the clothes physics are nice, and the blockyness is much less noticeable.

Mario Kart 7 looks more or less on par with Mario Kart Wii, I prefer it over Wii on the visual side mainly because it has more going on with the tracks visually.
Crush42 (2012-10-02 00:08:47)
@Pikarceus, since I haven't played enough KI:U, I'll take your word for it.
@Nintendude, graphics definitely aren't everything (as that was only one point I originally brought up), but KI:U and maybe SF643D are the best-looking first-party games so far, and Dead Or Alive: Dimensions, to me, anyways, looks much better than they do, and Resident Evil: Revelations has XBox 360-quality graphics, making it look even better. I just think Nintendo should spend more time making a game look great than they are right now. (But yes, as the rest of my points suggest, they also need to spend a lot more time making sure their games are fun, fresh, and new, so we don't have the next Mario game be another slightly remixed NSMBDS, like NSMBWii/2 were.)
pikarceus (2012-10-02 21:22:49)
Graphics make the game, they make the gameplay.

Ex: You're playing a platformer, your character needs to jump.

Your character will need a jumping animation. (Graphics)

@Nintendude-Every Wii game is 480p, so I don't understand the big deal.

@Crush42

It is nigh impossible for the 3DS to have visuals even close to the PS3/360, but through the small screen, pre-rendering, and bump mapping (Which fails with the 3D on), they can fool you into thinking that.

Yes, Revelations looks great. But the blood looks like gooey, pixelated ketchup, shadows are often jagged, and I'm not even sure if it has self-shadowing.

I would say the 3DS is a Wii.5 in the visual department, but it definitely lags behind in areas such as enemies on screen, framerates, and how large in game areas are.

Not sure how powerful its CPU is but I wouldn't be surprised if it was weaker than the Wii's.
pikarceus (2012-10-03 02:02:47)
That IGN article was from E3 2010 during all the hype, and it is worth noting that many E3 2010 demos didn't look as good as the final game. MGS 3D is a perfect example, its E3 2010 demo DID actually look almost as good as a PS3/360 game, but come E3 2011 and it suddenly looks like a Gamecube game.

"Doesn't matter if no animation for a character's movement"

If there is no jump animation, you can't jump. If there is no movement animation, you can't move.

It is VERY important. Without graphics, as I said before, the game would be a blank, empty space, and you wouldn't be able to play it.

3DS just can't do 360 graphics, I mean, look at the specs

3DS: 128MB of RAM
360: 512MB of RAM

3DS: Native res under 300p
360: Native res 720p

3DS: Dual core
360: Tri core
