Yup, it's me again, with another suckish movie review. The Dark Knight Rises comes out tomorrow(Which I'll have to wait until next week to see), and I'll be celebrating with reviews of the past two movies.

"And why is it that we fall, master Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up."

Batman was in sore need of a reboot. The last series started off strong in 1989, but by the end it had become a joke, thanks in part to the ridiculously campy acting. Batman Begins solved that problem, but it wasn't a amazing movie. But it did lay the foundations for what would be the great movie.

A huge chunk of the movie is Bruce Wayne searching for his purpose, involving a lot of brooding, moping, random flashbacks, and Ninja sword fights. Yep, Ninja sword fights. After a nice action scene he goes back to Gotham for some more moping, brooding, and eventually some Batman action. The movie is pretty slow, not in a painful way, but don't expect this film to rivet you. The fighting is pretty hoo-hum, especially an extremely drawn out Batmobile chase scene, but the plot and interpretations of various comic elements slighty make up for it. The main villain, Scarecrow, was a very weak and uninteresting character, while Raz-Al-Gul was interesting but only featured towards the beginning and end of the films.

I did like the use of fear: Scarecrow may have been uninteresting but the use of his weapon was not. Batman has to save Gotham from desolving into a mass of gibbering, hallucinating, freaks. Much of what Batman does is tech based: Praise be to God that he ditched the tights for sleek near bullet-proof armor. The cape now has an actual purpose, as do his gloves, oh wait, they're gauntlets now. The supporting characters do a fine job as well, from Alfred picking up a poisoned Batman to Rachel actually taking down Scarecrow. In the end though, this movie gives off a slighty underwhelming feeling, especially after the climax. The reward for wasting over two hours of your life? Watch to the end, it may be the one fleeting moment where you actually are on the edge of your seat.

Batman Begins isn't a great film. It does what needed to be done, it gets the origin and this and that out of the way, laying the groundwork for its far superior sequel. The film doesn't do much wrong, it just doesn't do much to capture your interest and hold it. Batman Begins is a good movie, but not a great one.

Overall: 3.5/5
