Mini Review: Netflix

An acceptable if less than ideal Netflix experience.

Netflix, you know it, you love it. And last summer it was made available for the Nintendo 3DS. Does the experience hold up on Nintendo's latest portable? Yes and no.

The first thing I noticed was that Netflix took quite awhile to load on my 3DS. Much longer than on my Wii. The 3DS also seemed to have difficulty rendering the images on the menu, and the search load times were agonizing as well. On the bright side the actual movies loaded very well, and the streaming was good, I experienced no lag or freezing while watching Netflix.

The set-up is pretty good. Movies are displayed for selection on the touch screen, with info on the top screen. When watching a movie, the animation is on the top screen, and the pause menu on the touch screen. I found navigation very comfortable and easy to use.

In terms of quality, Netflix for the 3DS isn't quite there. The quality seems good enough at first glance, but when there is a lot of on screen movement, everything becomes pixelated. The 3DS also seems to have a dislike of the color black. Whenever darker or black colors appear, they are pixelated. I was pleasantly suprised by the sound. It is loud and clear, head phones may be recommended but aren't a must.

One other thing that mars the experience is a glitch that still hasn't been patched. If you suspend Netflix and load the browser, there is a very good chance your 3DS will freeze. This has happened to me multiple times, and still does, despite the fact that there was an update.

Netflix for the 3DS may have a good interface, but is brought down by load times, glitches, and iffy quality. It is acceptable, but all other versions of Netflix are far superior.

Overall: 7/10

Why are you guys agreeing on the glitching? It's a fact not an opinion.

I love this! It's great for when your on vacation and your family hogs the only TV! I hate the glitch when you search for something and it restarts your 3DS.
