You might have had a waste of skin father who actually abused kids, but all methods of punishment as long as they are not cruel, unusual, or life threatening are perfectly lawful.

Every little thing is considered child abuse anymore (including spanking), so physical discipline is out of the question. And yes, scolding your child can be considered mental abuse/scarring them for life, which CPS can be called for to take away your child. And if you're forbidden to be able to be able to peacefully practice your religion in public schools, and you don't see a problem with it, well then, Nuts, you live up to your username in the worst way.
Also, before anyone tries to say that I don't know what child abuse is, or have no say in it, just STFU, cos I've been strangled nearly to death more than once, by my stepdad, who has kicked out me and every one of my siblings at least once while we were still underage. So believe me when I say, a spanking, on the whole, is NOT child abuse.
