For the record, I was aware that the original poster was actually referring to fictional ponies. I think MLP ponies look like cartoons. Childish cartoons where everything is made to look cute.

Eh, MLP was originally made for little girls (G1 through G3.5) until they reached G4. At that point they decided to target MLP to all audiences and made less girlish ponies- thus creating Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Apple Bloom, more male characters, etc.
From G1 to G3.5, the only ponies they had from G4 were Rainbow Dash, Scootaloo, Twilight, and Cheerilee. Celestia did not exist nor did Luna before G4, I think, so they really just shook up MLP into a for-all-audiences sort of thing.
Fun Fact: G1 and G2 had humans in them. It actually revolved around a little girl who pretty much owned half the ponies. Ponyville was the only place that existed- no Canterlot, Manehattan, Phillydelphia, or any other provinces in Equestria for that matter.
Fun Fact 2: G1-G3 MLP did not just have the standard Earth/Unicorn/Pegasus set. They had Sea/Pegasus/Rainbow/Earth/Unicorn Ponies.
Fun Fact 3: Applejack and Twilight are the only original ponies that carried on from G1 to G4.
Source: I used to watch My Little Pony from Generation 1 all the way to 4.
PS. G1 Sea Ponies were literally seahorses, except they had HORSE HEADS. They didn't even have hooves and they look really creepy.
