Predetermied Personalities...?

AntiChrist mentioned this in the "Babies and Parenthood" thread.

This is just a thought that intrigued me. I would personally think that personality is determined by experiences and philosophies...even siblings who grow up in the same household with the same parents, each have different experiences. But if someone can expand on "predetermined personalities" would be appreciated.

And what do you think? Are we helpless over our personalities or do we produce it ourselves, whether subconsciously or otherwise?

(Also, I'm aware of the title typo. Don't start eve)

Ha. Science.

This thread needs some Freud.

Lani, nobody knows what gives people a certain personality. That's why we have psychology and we still study the human mind. There is no definite answer.

What mega said is only from the biological viewpoint and is actually frowned upon by many psychologists.

The soul is the only part of our selves we can change at will. Personality is really a chosen thing. If you have the will to change, you can.

What Mega said is 100%, without any small piece of doupt, true. Weather you like it or not. Yes, there are environmental variables that can manipulate your personality. If you are born to end up really intelligent when you turn 17, but you are stolen from your original parents and raised in a ghetto by irresponsible, naive parents, you can turn out only half as smart as you couldve been, or less. Once you reach a certain age, however, it isn't very likely that your personality will change very much or at all.

In my opinion, that age would be somewhere around 17 or 18.

Woah, so does everyone in my family want to do Dimentio?
Go to boo, i moved there.

All of you agreeing with mega obviously have no experience with psychological theory. You're only thinking about the branch of biological theories.

I'll recommend a book to you:

-The Ego and the Id by Sigmund Freud (If you're talking about psychology and you've never heard of this man before, I recommend you delete your ignorant posts and promptly exit the thread. Thinking that you know something about psychology without knowing who Freud is, is the equivalent of trying to say you know something about physics without knowing who Issac Newton is.)
By the looks of it, most of you don't know.

The very reason we have psychology and that we study the human brain still is the fact that the human condition CANNOT be determined by genetics alone. There are a whole slew of other theories involved. Psychodynamics, Behavioristic, Socio-Cultural. The list goes on and on and it's been proven that genes alone do not dictate a person's mental processes.

Nature vs nurture, guys.

No one is saying it is only one without the other, Kish. It is both.

Brandon, you're not making any sense.

I dunno.
I know that hardly anyone on this site has actually taken a course on psychology alone. I'm just making sure nobody gets any incorrect notions.
Nutsy (2014-09-06 17:48:19)
It's all about soul, right?

I believe that personality develops over time, and we're each born with our default personalities. That personality continues to change (even if it's only a little) until you pass away.

I just want everyone to consider multiple theories. Having static beliefs is a nono.
Nutsy (2014-09-06 17:58:06)
Having static beliefs keeps us grounded.

You lost me at "I believe".
