Can one form their own opinion around something, rather than following and hanging onto every last word supposedly spoken by some god or diety?

Because there are religions that are against cutting your hair and fingernails and stuff along the lines of grooming oneself, but everyone chooses only to hate upon people for certain things even though within the Christian bible, you are told not to judge another.
