Four different entities behind MLP

Hasbro: They own MLP.

Writers/Producers/Directors: They are freelance, meaning they only work with Hasbro for this alone, for the most part they have creative control until the Big H wants to step in for some product placement.

Voice Actors: Self explanatory, they dont really work for Hasbro either.

DHX: Also separate from hasbro, they handle storyboarding and animation.

@Fluxer They are trying to compete with Mattel's "Monster High". This goes to show that writers aren't always to blame for mistakes the show makes. Sometime Hasbro gives them a premise and they just have to work with it, Canterlot Wedding is an example of this done right.

And if I'm not mistaken, both MLP and Happy Tree Friends are animated in Flash using vectors, which is probably why they look the same.
