Fluffeh is absolutely right. It is more of a status thing than it is anything else for the most part. At the sneaker shows people are wearing and buying the most highly sought out after shoe on the market at the time. Me personally, my 1k shoe I bought it back because it had sentimental value to me. My other shoe I got offered 2.4k for, same thing. They mean too much to me personally.

Is there anything wrong with $50-$100 shoes? No, not at all. Wear what you like. Me personally I like the feeling and knowing of when i'm walking by people are looking down at my shoes thinking "Holy , this guy is wearing (insert shoe name here)" So I wear high valued sneakers a lot of the times. However I still wear ones that aren't worth as much but what I personally like.

I honestly just like the classic Adidas aesthetic.
Not the fancy high tops or runners.
Stan Smiths are ugly meme shoes though.
