Japanese entertainment has a distinct method of storytelling that differs from the rest of the world.
In addition, they use Animation as a serious story-telling medium, whereas in the US, it's just used for Cartoons and Comedy. For s and giggles, and rarely ever a serious story told through it.

So yes Story + Cartoon = Anime, unless it's made in the US, which by then it's only ever treated as a cartoon, rather than a storytelling medium, so the "Story" part is cut out of the Equation.

Go on, Tell me any Miyazaki film is just a cartoon, and is comparable to any other Cartoons. After all, it's just story + cartoon right?

I never said American animation is bad. I do still watch it for short period entertainment.

Me saying Story+Cartoon= Anime was a simple way to get people to visualize it. You all read too far into it.

While the dictionary definition is indeed accurate, you should know better than that.

The reason A:TLA is comparable to some anime is that is tells a serious, compelling story through an animated medium in the same way many Anime in Japan do. You're correct, It's not the art or the story itself, but rather, how the medium is used.

It's the same for Cinema. A movie made in a German or Indian studio, is still, by the dictionary definition, just a movie, and no different from movies made in Hollywood.

Yet no one considers Chinese Cinema the same as American Cinema unless you're really set on using the dictionary definition, and not the actual content of each. American Cinema can make Wuxia-like films, A staple of Chinese Cinema, but they're Wuxia-like because the elements of what makes it similar to Wuxia films is present in the movie, and not considered "Pure Wuxia" because it's not Chinese in origin.

Yet, these examples are far few and between because of how differently these different cultures use the same medium. You will rarely find Anime comparable to American Cartoons, and you will rarely ever find German or Dutch cartoons similar to Anime.

If simply being from Japan was the only requirement, and something like South Park were to have originated in Japan, then by definition it's an Anime despite having zero traits in common with other Anime aside from being made in Japan, just like if "The Fault in Our Stars" were to be made in China, it would be, by definition, Chinese Cinema despite having none of the traits aside from the bare minimum of being made in China.

I never said "Cartoons" were inferior, or that American Animation can't be taken seriously. I never said anything negative about how Americans go about their animation,

It's not at all related to what I Like/Dislike/Prefer

It's about the two not at all being comparable despite the same medium being used.

Before you say: "Why don't you watch anime or listen to Vocaloid, etc.?"

Here is why:
-I can't watch anime because of my TV having no channels
-Even if I had those "channels" or I watched "Netflix", I still won't watch those anime "shows"
-Overrated
-Vocaloid is pretty awful IMO
-I listen to Rock, and I can't compare those two genres
-Attack on Titan is a piece of garbage, why would I watch it?

When I say American Cartoons don't take themselves seriously, I mean just that. They don't take themselves seriously.

American cartoons are mainly comedy works either outright being making parodies of other works and making humor by taking something known and bending it so far it might as well be broken, or simply being humor in the form of over the top, impossible and silly situations that occur once an episode.

Works aimed at mature audiences have egregious amounts of this as they are less restricted in how far they can push their humor and what methods they use to deliver it.

They don't take themselves seriously, and the rare few times they aren't humor-centric and instead focus on narrative, they're more comparable to movies and Anime than they are to other cartoons.

Japan is more story centric and oftentimes takes itself very seriously, and even their most humor-centric works still have some elements of a story. It's a cartoon with a plot and consistent story where every episode directly follows the next rather than a straight cartoon where every episode is ignored in the continuity, or held together in a semi-consistent continuity.

This is again shown in the more mature works. They touch on everything from religion, to the value of life, to the effects of holding onto codes of honor, and the genres of anime are categorized more like books where Slice-of-Life stories, to crime dramas, to fantasy tales of great heroes and mighty monsters, to just a simple romance story about two star-crossed lovers.
