Well Hideaki Anno made it before Evangelion. I haven't finished it, it's pretty nice looking but if you're looking for a serious sci-fi then it probably isn't for you. A lot of fan service, but it's definitely a fun sci-fi.

I get annoyed at any fanservice unless its mild like Love Live or most KyoAni stuff. Not that one Deko scene in Chuunibyo when she was drinking milk though. That was uncomfortable.

Also excluding Musaigen no Phantom World because that show is garbage.
