Thing is, Hrothgar was a real king too, but that doesn't support Beowulf as being historically accurate, and Troy having once been an actual city doesn't mean The Illiad is more than just a story. Including real people and places in fictional works alongside fictional characters and places is something that dates back to some of the earliest stories written.

Doesn't support it, but it does give an insight as to the time period where the story came to be.

Want to know what I think?
That these legends are just so well known, so immensely and biblically renowned that people WILL believe it. And then there's no swaying their view. One of many reasons why I'm an atheist.
