Really, it's not that bad. Spongebob only has 214 episodes despite consistently staying on TV for 18 years. Nickelodeon isn't milking their property as much as they could, not by a long shot.

Compare that to another Western cartoon series currently airing, one that I think is the perfect example of milking, My Little Pony. MLP has been around less than seven years and is currently on its 155th episode, and it isn't stopping.

I think Nickelodeon actually has a lot of respect for Spongebob and don't just see him as a cash grab.

Good point, Mega. 214 episodes really isn't all that many considering it's been running (on and off?) for 18 years. Steven Universe is already up to 132, and I believe that's even more recent than MLP (late 2013).

The thing about Spongebob though is how he's remained a household icon and internet sensation, pretty much since he started. He's a large part of memes, new and old..not because his fandom is cringey or there's some inside joke or cult following or something...it's just an everyday character/show that everyone knows, and it's STILL going.

@SMO, I'd certainly say Fairly Odd Parents is milking itself dry with absolutely terrible new content, but as comparisons go: it was first produced in 1998, and only has 161 episodes as of today (there was a hiatus between 2006-2008)...unlike newer cartoons (MLP, SU, etc) which have only been running 7-4 years and have already surpassed or nearly met the number of FOP episodes.

I'm not really sure if we should judge how much a show is being milked compared to the episode release rate, though...perhaps it should be more dependent on whether or not the content that's being released is half-assed or not. If they still have interesting and creative ideas/plots, why not release the episodes as soon as you like? I consider it milking when they're clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas yet insist to keep pushing to squeeze out every penny off the name they can.

The reason why MLP is constantly making as much as they can is because of money which is obvious. MLP is surprisingly the luckiest ones who makes a crap ton of $ because of 4Chan who made a thing called brony. They have a frickin brony con and mlp porn called clops. In my opinion, I don't get how a kids show turned most people on and I've seen like couple episodes of them and I just can't understand how people would like it. But hey, that's just my opinion. But the thing is that shows basically depend on how much people enjoy it and they make money out of because that's the point of why they did in the first place.
