I live in Alaska. Duh.
Pros:
-Reindeer hot dogs. All those snooty tourists that make snide remarks about how they "don't want to eat Rudolph, thank you very much" don't know the heavenly taste they are missing.
-Winter sports. Skiing, specifically. On Mount Alyeska.
-Relatively warm summers. I'm talking 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit, here, which is absolutely sweltering compared to the other seasons.
-Wildlife. Bears, moose, etc. etc. in your backyard. Eagles are like pigeons in Alaska. They're also very large.
-Over 80 percent of the land of Alaska is untouched and undeveloped, just wildlife.
-Very clean air.
-Everybody is nice.
-No pollution. At all.
-You can get the entire pack of wolves to howl at you in the AK Zoo for eight bucks. You can also feed them.
-Constant snow days.
Cons:
-Winter driving is a deathtrap.
-Skiing wear problems:
Wear thick gloves > Thick gloves get wet > Thick gloves freeze > Frostbite
Wear thin gloves > Frostbite
Wear no gloves > Frostbite
Wear mittens > Cold hands
Wear wool mittens > Frostbite
Wear anything cotton > It gets wet > It freezes > Frostbite (or pneumonia)
Wear less than three layers > Cold, very, very cold
New skis > More likely to lose control
Old skis > Rougher to handle
Long skis > Hard to maneuver
Short skis > Hard to maneuver
-Driving to the next town over from Anchorage takes about three hours. Driving about the distance of two centimeters on the map is five hours. Everything is widely spaced and takes a long time to get to.
-Seward Highway is always traffic jammed. Your three hour drive becomes five.
-Everything is a little more expensive.
-We get the new things later than everybody else.
What do you like/not like about where you live?
