Cutting yourself doesn't solve anything

Ignorance at it's finest. Yes, I've been involved in self harm in the recent past for reasons that I shall keep to myself. Did you not stop to think that maybe people have no self control? And you're saying you're sick of it? How do you think that the people doing it feel? You don't understand mental health at all, so don't rant about something that you don't know anything about, ok?

How would you know anything if you've never done it yourself?

I think there are a lot you forgot to point out and a lot of ways you could've interpreted this better.

Despite that I see where you are going with this.

It does not relieve stress, but the real reason people do it is for attention and sympathy.

In other words, "I'm special if I'm depressed".

Also, I hope that by "self influenced" you mean "self diagnosed".

Most teenagers diagnose themselves with depression ( which they can't do and shouldn't try to do ) to gain attention and feel special.

FIrst off, depression is NOT self-induced. What if you were being abused, or tortured, and felt trapped? Then you become depressed. First it's cutting, then it's attempting suicide, then, you kill yourself. I don't believe in going to hell for suicide.

Oh, and I hardly think they do it for attention.

^ you have a lot to learn.

Depression is a natural emotion...just as happiness, anger, and excitement. "Mental Health" isn't an accurate term...You can't be mentally unhealthy (unless, perhaps, you're a psyco). Despite what you call it, we all experience depression. I don't want to see anymore "Don't tell me how to live when you don't even know the feeling." No, trust me, you're not the only person in the world who experiences massive depression.

I can recall "cutting" being related with emo people...Those gothic/scene kids who want massive amount of attention. These days, I think kids cut out of...popularity. So many people do it now and share with everyone that they do it...Emo kids got attention for cutting, perhaps kids cut as a cry for help and attention--even if that's not going through their mind at the time. All they know is that Depression = Cutting, so they do it.

Okay, so although I agree that cutting is stupid, instead of a "Shame on you thread",perhaps you (Slick) should also provide an alternative...How do YOU deal with stress and depression?

I don't think there's anything wrong with depression. It's good to cry (that's a fact). Of course, it's not a pleasurable feeling, nor do you ever WANT to be depressed...However popping pills and/or cutting yourself to forget that depression exists is ridiculous. It's an unfortunate part of life that we all must deal with.

I usually watch a movie or do a hobby that I really enjoy. Production always gives me a lift--it makes me feel useful. I can write a song or poem inspired by my depression. I occupy myself until the clouds blow over. Now, that's just me...That's how I deal with my depression, and I can end up making good use out of it.

I certainly think depression can be self-inflicted...Listing the reasons you should be upset and feeling sorry for yourself...You can dig a deep hole of darkness all on your own. Don't. Do. This. It will only make things worse.

I'm sure this thread will get closed but it made a really interesting discussion...

Fact is, no one really knows anything about "Depression Disorders" except for the fact that they can make a pill to make you feel good and get money for it.

Just because a "professional" says that you're depressed is not a reason to accept it and cut and pout. There's nothing stopping you from enjoying yourself.

First of all, I do completely agree with your insights. I myself have a few scars on my arm, but only because I thought everyone was right about it making them "feel better." Also, when I am extremely enraged, I sometimes find my hand flying towards my pocket knife in a blind rage. I was never so wrong in my life. All you have is a bunch of scars that you have to hide from friends, parents, etc. Now, my depression is considered self-induced, since it is not due to trauma or a lack of seratonin. But, it heavily relies on my religious beliefs (atheism) and heaven, afterlife, and the like. Now I continue to feel like my life is completely meaningless, and it's gotten to the point where I swear I can feel an unsettling manifestation in my chest when I think about life after death (or the lack of). So yes, I don't understand how being emo became mainstream, or how publicly admitting to self mutilation is "cool," but if you ask me, it just shows you how stupid kids are these days. It really is an insult to those who deal with major depression. Utterly disgusting if you ask me.

My recommendation: one should refrain from expressing an opinion on a topic unless one possesses enough relevant information to discuss said topic. Otherwise, your argument will lack ethical appeal, make a fool out of you, and convince no one.

To the person who said "I have depression, I KNOW this stuff"

You can't diagnose yourself with depression. If you did really have it you wouldn't even be mentioning it on this website and you wouldn't be getting so angry and defensive. ( or should I say most likely wouldn't )

I know you feel different and unique because you think you are depressed but for your own good, I think you should just drop it.
